The International Dentist Education Program (IDEP) D.D.S. at UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry offers qualified graduates of foreign dental schools the opportunity to earn the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, challenge state or regional board examinations and practice in the United States.
Once accepted into the program, students begin by participating in a six-months hybrid preparatory course which includes interactive online distance learning followed by customized hands-on training taught by specialists and content experts. This is geared towards maximizing individual clinical skills and preparing each student for integration into the clinic. After participating in this course, students will be integrated with traditional third-year dental students for 2 years of multidisciplinary training with a strong clinical focus. More than 2000 hours of on-site comprehensive patient care learning experiences, on-site and off-site specialty and community outreach rotations as well as enriching selective courses will prepare them for a range of successful dental careers.

Transcript Evaluation and Instructions
Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE)
We only accept ECE “Course by Course” Evaluation of the applicant's foreign dental schools’ transcripts. The ECE evaluation will be submitted electronically to ADEA CAAPID. When generated by ECE, a minimum U.S. COMPREHENSIVE GPA for the dental degree of 2.5 or above is required. Only the "comprehensive grade average" is accepted, not the "best result”.
Please include in the ECE evaluation any advanced dental education programs completed or in progress at the time of application that you attended outside of the United States if you want it to be considered by the admission committee. There is no minimum requirement for the GPA of the advanced dental programs.
IMPORTANT UPDATE: We no longer require you to provide your official transcripts of foreign dental degrees directly to our school during the application phase. However, the transcripts will be required during the interview phase.
Please refer to the "How to Apply" section on our program webpage: IDEP UTHSA
Letters of Evaluation Instructions
We require three electronic evaluations to be submitted to ADEA CAAPID.
Evaluation #1 must be from the Dean or a faculty from the dental school or a dental post-graduate program you attended. All references must have a contact phone number and be willing to be contacted by the admissions committee.
Content of the evaluation is important. Select references that have personal stories to attest to your knowledge, skill, and personality are stronger.
Length and involvement of relationships matter. Example: Someone that worked with you full time, (5 days a week for a year) is stronger than someone who worked with you occasionally for a year.
TOEFL Requirement Instructions
An official score report of your TOEFL examination must be received electronically by ADEA CAAPID from the Educational Testing Service (ets.org). We require a minimum iBT Scaled Score of 92. TOEFL and Home Edition iBT Scaled Scores are accepted. MyBest Scores are NOT accepted; no exceptions or modifications. The test must be no older than 2 years and must remain valid through the application deadline of the cycle in which you are applying.
National Board Requirement Instructions
We require either the Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE) or the National Board Exams Part 1 and Part 2 with a status of PASS. Official NBDE scores are submitted electronically to ADEA CAAPID directly from the American Dental Association.
Other Requirement Instructions
A supplemental administrative application fee is required and must be paid after completing your CAAPID application and by the deadline.
Please refer to the "How to Apply" section on our program webpage: IDEP UTHSA
While your application may show as complete in CAAPID, our program will only consider it complete once all requirements are fully met by the deadline. This includes:
- INBDE (or NBDE I and II) and TOEFL results received by CAAPID and uploaded in your application
- ECE evaluation received by CAAPID and uploaded in your application
- Recommendation letters completed in CAAPID
- Payment of the supplemental fee.
Only applications that are fully completed and meet all requirements by the deadline will be reviewed and considered for a KIRA virtual interview first, followed by an in-person interview.
To learn more about the application process, including what happens after you apply (interview process and acceptance), please refer to the "How to Apply" section on our program webpage: IDEP UTHSA
