Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD) has been a leader in dental education since its inception as The Indiana Dental College in 1879. IUSD is also home to Indiana's first dental hygiene program, established in 1950, reflecting a longstanding commitment to excellence in dental hygiene education and the advancement of oral health.
The IUSD Dental Hygiene Program offers a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene degree. The program is a full-time, three-and-one-half-year curriculum designed to prepare students for professional practice as dental hygienists and to provide a strong foundation for continued professional and educational development.
The curriculum consists of 31 credit hours of prerequiste undergraduate coursework completed at an accredited college or university prior to admission to the professional dental hygiene program. Following acceptance, students complete a comprehensive professional curriculum that includes 52 credit hours of core dental hygiene coursework delivered over five academic semesters and two summer sessions. Students also complete a 21 credit-hour specialized track in one of three areas: Public Health, Healthcare Administration, or Education.
Once admitted to the professional dental hygiene program, all required core and professional coursework is mandatory. The curriculum integrates foundational biomedical and dental sciences with didactic, laboratory, preclinical, and clinical experiences designed to develop the knowledge, skills, clinical judgement, ethical standards, and professional competencies required for entry-level dental hygiene practice.
The IUSD Dental Hygiene Program is committed to preparing graduates to provide safe, evidence-based, patient-centered care and to serve diverse populations in a variety of practice and community settings. Graduates are prepared to pursue professional opportunities in private dental practices, public health settings, educational institutions, community-based programs and other healthcare environments.
The Indiana University School of Dentistry Dental Hygiene Program is full accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
