The LSUHSC School of Dentistry (LSUSD) offers a bachelor of science. The program is offered at the dental school in New Orleans. The dental hygiene program is an integral part of the LSU School of Dentistry. The dental hygiene students provide dental hygiene care as part of comprehensive dental treatment. Dental hygiene and dental students take classes together, collaborate with each other on the needs of their shared patients, and learn to respect the contributions both professions make to the team concept of dental treatment.

Dental hygiene is regarded as a “people profession.” Possession of the ability to communicate and to provide and obtain cooperation from other individuals is a must. Ability to manage stress and possession of high ethical standards are also considered to be desirable qualities. Those interested in a career in dental hygiene should determine whether they have the commitment and flexibility required to succeed in the dental hygiene program and the profession.
