The University of Minnesota dental hygiene program is recognized as one of the outstanding programs in the country. Here, the curriculum blends a solid dental hygiene clinical education with the biological, behavioral, and social sciences as well as the liberal arts.
The dental hygiene program was established at the University of Minnesota in 1919 and is fully accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation. It is the only program in Minnesota that offers a Bachelor of Science degree in dental hygiene that is affiliated with a school of dentistry and a major academic health center.

Prerequisite Instructions
All prerequisite courses need to be completed with a C or above by June 1 of the year you enter dental school.
Course prerequisites with a C- or below grade must be re-taken for a higher grade. Biology and Chemistry must be taken within five years of entry into the program, and one or the other must be completed prior to application, with grades posted on your transcript submitted at the time of application. Online laboratory courses are not accepted. You may receive credit by earning satisfactory scores on an AP or IB exam.
- Anatomy - 3 semester credits, labs not required.
- General Biology - 3 semester credits, lab required. Microbiology courses do not satisfy the biology prerequisite.
- General Chemistry - 3 semester credits, lab required.
- Composition – 3 semester credits.
- Physiology – 3 semester credits, lab not required.
- Psychology – 3 semester credits.
- Sociology – 3 semester credits.
