The University of Nebraska Medical Center’s College Dental Hygiene program is distinguished by its student‑centered, hands‑on approach to training. With intentionally small class sizes, students benefit from close mentoring relationships with faculty, allowing for individualized attention throughout their education. The program integrates clinical experience from early on by having dental hygiene students work collaboratively with dental students in patient care clinics, simulating a professional, comprehensive practice environment. Technological resources such as CAD/CAM systems, 3D printers, and a digital design studio support students’ exploration of digital dentistry techniques.

In addition to core clinical and technical training, students at UNMC engage in community outreach programs that serve underserved populations—such as SHARING Clinic and the Special Olympics—offering opportunities to apply their skills in real‑world settings while fostering professional development and social responsibility. Classroom learning is enriched by interactive tools, e‑modules, and virtual reality applications, and students are encouraged to participate in faculty‑mentored research projects, often presenting their work at national conferences. The faculty play a central role in the program’s strengths: they are active clinicians, researchers, leaders in professional organizations, and committed educators who guide students toward both excellence and service.
