The LSUHSC School of Dentistry is pleased to announce a new Advanced Education Program in Orofacial Pain. The program in Orofacial Pain is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and has been granted the accreditation status of “initial accreditation”. The program is pending The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) accreditation approval.
On March 31, 2020, Orofacial Pain became the 12th ADA-recognized dental specialty in the United States.
The LSUSD Advanced Education Program in Orofacial Pain begins July 1st of each year, and of 24 months duration. Upon completing the 24-month program, the resident will be awarded a certificate of Advanced Education in Orofacial Pain and a Master of Science in Dentistry degree, with eligibility to take the American Board of Orofacial Pain exam.
During the program, students will develop clinical expertise and demonstrate knowledge, diagnostic skills, and treatment expertise in areas including musculoskeletal, neurovascular, neuropathic pain disorders, sleep disorders related to orofacial pain, orofacial movement disorders, intraoral, intracranial, extracranial, and systemic disorders that cause orofacial pain and/or dysfunction. They will spend over 65 percent of the assigned time in clinical practice providing care for Orofacial Pain patients and rotating through several specialty medical clinics (Neurology and Headache, Otolaryngology, Psychiatry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Sleep Medicine), with the remainder comprising academic (didactic) courses, research, seminars, conferences and teaching.
LSUSD Advanced Education program in Orofacial Pain will accept applicants from predoctoral dental education programs accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, predoctoral dental education programs in Canada accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada, and applicants from international dental schools.
Candidates interested in the program must apply through ADEA PASS (ADEA Postdoctoral Application Support Service) to meet the required admission criteria.
Up to two applicants are accepted annually. Candidates should possess competitive academic credentials and demonstrate a definite interest in Orofacial Pain. All applicants must have passed the National Board Dental Examination, and international dental school graduates must provide a minimum 100 TOEFL score and be US citizens or permanent residents.
