The LSUHSC School of Dentistry offers an Advanced Education Program in Orofacial Pain. The program in Orofacial Pain is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and has been granted the accreditation status of “initial accreditation”. Also, the program is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

On March 31, 2020, Orofacial Pain became the 12th ADA-recognized dental specialty in the United States.

The LSUSD Advanced Education Program in Orofacial Pain begins July 1 of each year and is 24 months in duration. Upon successful completion, residents are awarded a Certificate of Advanced Education in Orofacial Pain and a Master of Science in Dentistry degree and are eligible to pursue certification through the American Board of Orofacial Pain.

During the program, residents develop advanced clinical expertise in the diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal, neurovascular, neuropathic, and movement disorders; sleep-related conditions associated with orofacial pain; and intraoral, intracranial, extracranial, and systemic disorders contributing to orofacial pain and dysfunction. More than 65% of the program is devoted to supervised clinical care. Residents also rotate through specialty medical services including Neurology and Headache, Otolaryngology, Psychiatry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Sleep Medicine. The remaining time is dedicated to didactic coursework, research, seminars, conferences, and teaching.

The program accepts applicants from CODA-accredited predoctoral dental programs in the United States, CODA-accredited programs in Canada, and international dental schools.

Applicants must apply through ADEA PASS and meet all admission requirements. Up to two residents are accepted annually. Competitive academic credentials and demonstrated interest in Orofacial Pain are expected. Applicants must have successfully completed the National Board Dental Examination. Applicants who earned their dental degree outside the United States or Canada are eligible to apply. A minimum TOEFL score of 90 (Home Edition accepted) is required for these applicants.

The LSUHSC School of Dentistry does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
