Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine / Applied Biomechanics
The Applied Biomechanics program focuses on craniofacial-, cellular- and dental-biomechanics. This program explores clinically relevant principles and how these interrelate with advanced biomaterials and functional biomechanics to improve methods for successful craniofacial restorations. Additionally, the program provides students with an interdisciplinary foundation towards the interpretation of biophysical and biochemical assays, concerning cellular mechanotransduction, including but not limited to: Dynamic Cell cultures and Finite Element Modelling (FEM) techniques. Finally, it explores posture alterations that can carry through to gait and patient stability after alterations in patient’s occlusion.

The students will study basic biomechanics principles from the cellular- to the macro-scale level and associate them to clinical practice. The students will also familiarize with basic engineering principles. Advances in dental engineering will be reviewed, introducing students to the transition from medical imaging and processing to proactive functional design. The interrelation of biomaterial and shape, on the load bearing capacity of restorations will be analyzed, with respect to their mechanical performance. At the end of the program, the students will master clinical considerations relevant to biomechanics.

This program is intended for students planning to pursue careers in research, academics, or clinical dentistry. The students will be required to successfully complete the coursework, complete a scientific research project, and write and defend a thesis/dissertation.

Internationally-educated applicants must submit either the ECE or WES dental school transcript course-by-course translation and evaluation directly through PASS.  If the ECE/WES evaluation does not specifically state that your dental degree has been awarded, upload a scanned copy of your dental school diploma (notarization not required).

TOEFL Requirement Instructions

TOEFL is required for all applicants who are not US citizens or US Lawful Permanent Residents, and whose first language is not English. Request official TOEFL scores from ETS in the ADEA PASS application. Only official scores are considered.

  • Minimum score is 90 iBT.
  • TOEFL iBT Home Edition is accepted.
  • TOEFL Essentials is NOT accepted.
  • IELTS is NOT accepted.

International applicants who have earned a degree from an accredited United States or Canadian English-speaking institution may be exempted from the TOEFL requirement.
