The Fayetteville, NC Veterans Affairs Medical Center AEGD-1yr. program trains five residents each year in virtually all aspects of general dentistry. Our program is particularly heavy in the complex treatment planning of medically compromised patients, oral surgery (dental implants, surgical extractions, alveoplasty, tori removal, etc.), fixed and removable prosthodontics (to include opening vertical dimension with fixed restorations), periodontics (to include surgical treatment of periodontal disease and sinus augmentation with implant placement), and endodontic treatment of all teeth. During the program, a motivated resident can expect to place 40-50 implants, perform 100+ extractions, deliver 75+ crown units, deliver 30+ denture/partial units, and complete 15-20 root canals (all without financial considerations on the part of the patient). Our dental residents also have the opportunity to regularly utilize digital scanning and CAD-CAM technology for same day crowns and bridges in addition to 3D printers for occlusal guards and implant surgical guides.
The program utilizes a brand new, state-of-the-art, 26 chair dental clinic and provides regular interaction and feedback with all 9 AEGD-trained program mentors in addition to a staff prosthodontist and staff periodontist. The clinic contains an on-site lab with four lab technicians who also are available for instruction. Residents have assigned office space and their own dental chairs/assistants, a generous stipend, access to federal medical insurance, and 21 paid annual/sick leave days per year (in addition to 11 federal holidays). We also fully support the residents moonlighting in private practices one day per week in order to make the best of their four, 10-hour days per week schedule at the VA.
This program is ideal for a highly motivated young dentist who would like to solidify what they learned in dental school by learning how to "put it all together" while regularly pushing themselves out of their comfort zone resulting in a valuable expansion of their mental and physical professional skills.
All potential applicants are welcome to schedule a time to visit the program and meet the directors and staff before applying. Simply email the Program Director if interested.
