The primary mission of Asian Health Services (AHS) Advance Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency program is to provide comprehensive, appropriate and effective oral healthcare in a community health center setting, working alongside with a core group of general practitioners and specialists, oral surgery, periodontic, endodontic and pediatric providers. The program also embraces its missions that support excellence in education and the training of dental health professionals who will join the public health workforce to take care of the underserved communities. The dental residency program begins July 1 and ends June 30.

The residents will receive clinical experiences in a group practice environment alongside with a team of general dentists and dental specialists. The faculty at AHS are experienced practitioners who have taught and mentored residents and pre-doctoral dental students for over 20 years. The residents will gain knowledge of serving low-income patient population in a community health center setting.

In addition, the residents will gain experience providing oral health care to a diverse population of race, religious, ethnic and economic backgrounds.

The AEGD program is a 12-month long residency curriculum.

Clinical experience will be about 75 percent of the time, with the rest of the time spent on literature reviews, clinical case presentations, didactic curriculum that includes formal lectures, either in-person or via video teleconferencing, and small-group interactive sessions, ADA, CDA, oral health network, subscribed educational applications and consultations.

The residents will provide comprehensive oral health care to patients and have the opportunity to perform a variety of standard and advanced clinical procedures in all areas of dentistry under direct supervision of a team of general dentists and specialists, as described in the program’s curriculum. The residents also have the opportunity to collaborate with medical providers and behavioral health counselors through provider meetings and agency trainings.

Successful completion of the program can qualify residents for dental licensure via the postgraduate program pathway in California.
