Special Care Dentistry Internship 

The Goldman School of Dental Medicine Special Care Dentistry Internship is a one-year, full-time, non-degree study and clinical training program for dentists who want to achieve additional knowledge in the management of medically and developmentally complex special needs pediatric, adolescent and adult patients, and who wish to become competent working in the hospital setting. 

The program is designed to prepare clinicians to work in the field of Special Care Dentistry:

  • Develop skills to treat patients who have special health care needs.
  • Gain competence working in the hospital environment.
  • Learn behavioral techniques and assessments to better care for behaviorally complex patients.
  • Develop clinical skills which pertain to the practice of special care dentistry.
  • Learn sedation adjuncts to providing dental care.
  • Prepare for leadership positions in hospital/special care dentistry, including teaching, program administration and research.

Program Details 

  • Study evidence-based understanding of the underlying pathophysiology, etiology, prevention, and treatment of disorders with access to interdisciplinary patient care.
  • Training with respect to hospital dentistry, sedation practices, and restorative care for medically and developmentally complex pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients.
  • Research in Special Care Dentistry.

Transcript Evaluation and Instructions

U.S./Canadian applicants must provide their undergraduate transcript(s) within the PASS application. Unofficial copies of transcripts uploaded by the applicant may be used for application purposes. Official transcripts are required for matriculation. 

International applicants must submit either the ECE or WES dental school transcript course-by-course translation and evaluation directly through PASS. 

TOEFL Requirement Instructions

TOEFL is required for all applicants who are not US citizens or US Lawful Permanent Residents, and whose first language is not English. Request official TOEFL scores from ETS in the ADEA PASS application. Only official scores are considered.  

  • Minimum score is 90 iBT.
  • TOEFL iBT Home Edition is accepted.
  • TOEFL Essentials is NOT accepted. 
  • IELTS is NOT accepted.

International applicants who have earned a degree from an accredited United States or Canadian English-speaking institution may be exempted from the TOEFL requirement.
