Training General Practice Dental Residents at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, Virginia

The hospital-based dental service was established in 1980 and has experienced unprecedented growth, thanks to the support of Carilion Clinic. The program is well integrated into Carilion’s mission of providing comprehensive patient care services, resulting in optimum healthcare outcomes.

Since our program is well established with entrenched referral sources and a well-trained professional staff, you can expect a very diversified and intellectually stimulating educational experience. You will gain knowledge, experience, and expertise in patient care and practice management utilizing the most advanced technologies in dentistry.

Our program will comprehensively train residents to the GPR training guidelines set forth by the Commission on Dental Accreditation as well as include advanced and comprehensive training in prosthodontics and dental implantology, rotary endodontics, third molar removal, periodontal surgery, oral oncology, management of patients at the medical/dental interface, nasoalvelar molding for cleft lip and palate, and as part of the 2nd year option, IV sedation which meets most state licensing requirements for certification.

The residents will be trained to deliver dental care in multiple settings such as the hospital-based outpatient adult and pediatric clinics, inpatient bedside consultations, operating room, and community service experiences.

Additional experience will be gained in teaching medical students in the oral health/oral medicine curriculum at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.
