Advance Education in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery 48 month - MSD PROGRAM

Program Length: 48 months

  1. A candidate for the 48 month program WILL include a completion of Master’s of Science in Dentistry (MSD) coursework, with a conferral of the degree upon completion.  This will provide experiences for additional research exposure and scholarly activity.  The Master’s will be administered through the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine.  

The department only reviews applications through the American Dental Education Association Postdoctoral Application Support Service, or PASS.  

  • Admission requires the DMD or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
  • Ranking in the upper third of the graduating class and passage of the National Dental Board Exam.
  • Only those applications that are complete and received by the deadline are forwarded to the program director for consideration.
  • It is the responsibility of the applicant to see that all materials are submitted and that their file is complete.
  • NBME CBSE score of 60 or higher.

The most qualified applicants should possess:

  • Standing in the upper 25% of their dental school class.
  • Strong letters of recommendation. 
  • Externships and/or extracurricular activity in oral and maxillofacial surgery that demonstrate an interest and commitment to the field. 

Additional Requirements and Information for International Students 

  1. Applicants who have graduated from a non-English speaking dental school and for whom English is not their first language must take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Test System). In order to be admitted, the applicant must score above one of the following minimum scores: 
    • TOEFL Paper-Based Test: 550
    • TOEFL Computer-Based Test: 213
    • TOEFL Internet-Based Test: 90
    • IELTS Test: 6.5
  2. Applicants to our graduate program must take the National Board Dental Exams, the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), or the ADAT (Advanced Dental Admission Test). Only one score is necessary for a complete application.
  3. There is no financial aid given to international students enrolled in the M.S.D. programs. A letter of "proof of support" must be submitted when a student is accepted into a program. Applicants must establish that they have available financial resources sufficient to complete the program uninterrupted. All on-campus work-study employment for international students must be cleared by the individual program director and the University Office of International Students. 

The applicant for the 4-year program applicant will be held to the same level of discipline-specific instruction in certificate and degree-granting program.  This is to ensure that the residents of these programs receive the same educational requirements as set forth in these Standards.  Similar outcomes assessments such as semi-annual evaluations, OMS Benchmarks, annual OMSITE examinations, and others, will be utilized.  The program structure for the 48 month program is included for review. Note that all standards in CODA standard 4 curriculum and program duration for education are met for this 48-month program. Ongoing program effectiveness will be evaluated using the CODA Annual Survey. 

A candidate for the 48 month program, apart from clinical OMS experience, will include a Masters pathway for additional research exposure and scholarly activity.  This Masters program will be administered through Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine Graduate Education with additional masters’ coursework and curriculum, along with additional tuition expenses, as deemed necessary.
