The Children's national Hospital is an internationally renowned, level 1 pediatric trauma center and level 1 Pediatric surgery center. The program in Pediatric Dentistry offers a broad exposure to all relevant components of pediatric dentistry including but not limited to well children, children with medical conditions, children with special healthcare needs, minor and major dento-facial traumas, sedation techniques, orthodontics, endodontics and operating room experience. To provide a high level of care, the pediatric dental residents have avaialable to them many other specialists and support personnel with whom they may consult in the treatment of cases requiring multidisciplinary approach.
The institution also sponsors a large Craniofacial Center that pediatric dental residents actively participate in as a part of the craniofacial team. The primary emphasis through all these activities is to integrate clinical experience with didactic knowledge.
An ongoing lecture and seminar series offers approximately 20 hours of more each month of formal presentations and case reviews and includes active participation by staff and residents in an interactive environment. Didactic training includes lectures in pediatric dentistry, growth and ddevelopment, interceptive orthodontics, prevention, sedation techniques, radiology, pharmacology, oral pathology, biostatistics, orthodontics and special patient care. Journal club, literature review and treatment planning seminars supplement didactic education.
