The Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program is a one-year hospital-based stipend program for US or Canadian trained dentists whose purpose is to develop and enhance the didactic knowledge, clinical skills, and related professional interests of the recently graduated dental student while stressing the general dental care of complex medically compromised and developmentally disabled hospitalized patients.
The AEGD program provides residents with training and experience in comprehensive multidisciplinary oral health care at a level of skill and complexity beyond that accomplished in predoctoral training. This training focuses on different types of patients, including patients with special needs. The program emphasizes resident training in clinical examination, diagnosis, treatment planning, and provision of sequenced comprehensive care that addresses the patient's needs, desires, and limitations. Patients with very complex medical histories, multifaceted infectious diseases, developmental disabilities, geriatric medical complications, and those patients who cannot be examined, diagnosed, or treatment planned in a clinical outpatient environment are directly referred to the AEGD program.
Given the close relationship with the NYPH, the Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC), the College of Dental Medicine, the program is in the position of having a large and diverse patient pool as a source of patients for the residents. With the Advanced Education in General Dentistry clinic being an integral part of the dental school, residents are referred patients from the school’s triage area where they have been previously screened and assessed by faculty to require dental treatment at a level beyond that of the predoctoral student.
Residents engage in episodic care only when their assigned patient seeks treatment on an irregular basis or will not keep regularly scheduled appointments for comprehensive dental care. They provide emergency dental care as the need arises, as any practitioner would in a large group practice, but they are not routinely scheduled to do so. With all the postdoctoral specialty programs present in the dental school, residents have the opportunity to work closely with their faculty and postdoctoral students in a number of disciplines.
