Come Train With Us!

Founded in 1955, the GPR at Denver Health (DH) has been doing dentistry for decades—well before the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) was established. We’re proud to be part of one of the oldest and largest community health center networks in the country.

At Denver Health, dentistry is fully integrated within a nationally recognized Level One Trauma Center, offering residents unparalleled exposure to dental emergencies and traumatology.

As a nonprofit teaching hospital, DH trains 1,300+ interns, residents, and fellows annually across all specialties. A dedicated Office of Education ensures our learners receive strong institutional support.

Our one-year, hospital-based program offers intensive clinical, didactic, and interdisciplinary training at the postdoctoral level. Residents graduate prepared to deliver comprehensive care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Our program received CODA re-accreditation in September 2024 with no findings.

What Our Program Offers:

🏥 1. Hospital-Based Training

Provide dental care at Denver’s primary safety-net hospital—ideal preparation for treating medically complex patients and individuals with intellectual & developmental disabilities. Our program provides extensive clinical exposure few programs can match.

🩺 2. Medical-Dental Integration

Engage in innovative care models that reflect the future of dentistry—treating medically complex patients in collaboration with physicians and specialists. Experience how interprofessional education elevates patient care.

🪥‍️ 3. Service to a Diverse, Underserved Community

Care for a wide range of patients, enhancing your cultural competence and health literacy skills.  Our mission is to serve the underserved in our community and empower our residents to go on to do the same

🧠 4. Learning Straight from Dental Specialists

Master general dentistry by learning from our faculty prosthodontist, periodontist, and oral medicine specialist.  Train in DH’s 2 other CODA-accredited programs—Pediatric Dentistry and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery—creating a robust interdisciplinary learning environment.

💼 5. Comprehensive Care Model

Care for your own panel of patients—from treatment planning to case completion—building confidence and continuity-of-care skills.

💬 6. Strong Didactic Curriculum & Mentorship

Present at Grand Rounds (with 4 other advanced education programs in CO), attend literature reviews, guest lectures, and treatment planning sessions which offer critical academic depth.

📈 7. Career Preparation + Loan Forgiveness

Our graduates go on to excel in private practice, public health, and specialty programs—equipped with real-world, versatile clinical skills, and able to handle any emergency. As a resident, your training takes place in a PSLF-qualifying institution, giving you the opportunity to grow clinically while making progress toward federal loan forgiveness.

🌄 8. Work-Life Balance in Denver

Enjoy a vibrant city with world-class dining, outdoor adventure, and a strong community—all at the foot of the Rocky Mountains.

Resident Testimonials

"Residency at Denver Health serves as a great foundation for increasing your confidence and skills of general dentistry.  There is no shortage of experience treating a variety of medically complex patients. The guidance from the attendings at the program allowed us to develop a great surgical foundation! I was very happy with the amount of time we spent with the OMFS & Peds dental departments to become more well rounded general dentists." -CP '25

"I am so grateful for my time at Denver Health. I walked into the program as an unexperienced, recent grad and walked out as a well-seasoned dentist. No crazy radiograph or medical complexity can deter me now. I will for the rest of my career encourage others to pursue a GPR because of my experience. Thank you, Dr. Meyers and team for everything!" -KM '25

"It is a tough residency, but hard work does not go un-rewarded. Through this residency, I became more competent in my general dentistry skills as well as in the specialty areas of surgical extractions, prosths, molar endo, pediatrics, and periodontal surgeries. I gained more experience working in the emergency department, as well as through my OR rotations. I strengthened that connection between dental and medical understanding how issues in the mouth can affect the rest of the body as well as vice versa, I go out into the workforce, more confident in the procedures that I will perform and more compassionate in the interactions that I have with my patients in the public health setting. If there was a second year of residency, I would have gladly signed up for it knowing how much I have grown this past year. I hope it will do the same for you, if not more." ST '25
