The ECU SoDM 1-year AEGD Program integrates didactic education and clinical experience at a level beyond the predoctoral educational program, and with a view to broadening the Resident’s professional knowledge and clinical skills to the point that they can provide comprehensive oral healthcare for patients with complex dental needs. The program is also designed to increase the resident’s ability to coordinate with other healthcare professionals, both medical and dental, with a view to enhancing the resident’s ability to provide oral healthcare for patients with special needs. And finally, the program is designed to promote the ideals of Community Service, as well as the need for ongoing and lifelong Continuing Professional Education.
The goal of the program is to graduate well-rounded and competent general dentists with enhanced professional knowledge and skills, and the ability to provide comprehensive oral healthcare for patients, independently and in a geographic location that may lack the direct support of other dental specialists.
The program is based at the East Carolina University (ECU) School of Dental Medicine (SoDM) and at eight Community Service Learning Centers (CSLC). Each CSLC, which are located throughout the State of North Carolina, are 16-chair ultra-modern clinics with the latest in clinical and communications technology.
The AEGD residency program provides advanced training in general dentistry, while also bringing primary dental care to historically underserved areas in the state of North Carolina. Each CSLC is staffed by general and specialist dentists and a complete staff of hygienists, dental assistants, and administrative personnel. The CSLCs are linked to Ross Hall, the main clinical facility of the ECU School of Dental Medicine in Greenville, by a sophisticated videoconferencing network. Residents are never more than a few mouse-clicks away from the combined expertise of the SoDM faculty. Residents who are based at one of the CSLCs will also have a two week rotation through the School of Dental Medicine in Greenville. The ECU SoDM Residency is of special interest to those interested in gaining expertise in treating patients with more complex dental needs in an outpatient setting, and those interested in practicing in a rural community.
The curriculum spans all disciplines in dentistry, and approaches patients from the comprehensive perspective. Using innovative state of the art dental and distance education technology, residents can expect to:
• Expand their knowledge of diagnosis and treatment of oral and maxillofacial diseases.
• Increase their clinical experience and skills.
• Learn principles of implant dentistry, aesthetic dentistry, endodontics, and advanced surgical techniques.
• Develop practice management and leadership skills while working in a private practice-like setting.
• Take advantage of state-of-the-art dental technology.
• Learn advanced dental techniques from general and specialist faculty on the main campus and at the CLSCs.
• Participate in advanced education seminars, literature reviews, and patient care conferences in all of the dental disciplines.
There is no tuition associated with the ECU 1-Year AEGD certification program. Residents receive a stipend consistent with that of a Post Graduate Year 1 (PGY I) resident, which is currently $60,591. AEGD residents are also eligible for benefits including vacation and holidays, health insurance, an allowance for attending continuing dental education, and professional liability insurance.
