The dental general practice residency at ECU offers a one-year program for recent graduates to prepare for private practice, community healthcare or for further graduate study in a dental specialty area.  The program has been accredited since 1980, providing opportunities for four residents each year in supervised clinical experience in dental treatment, especially as it relates to systemic disease.

A primary objective of the residency program is to provide optimal dental care to both medically-compromised and healthy patients, both inpatient and outpatient.

The program's dental clinic functions as a three doctor practice, which enables one resident to be on rotation to other services or otherwise off site while the others see patients.  Rotations include anesthesiology, otolaryngology (ENT), family medicine, and emergency medicine.
