FHMC Department of Dental Medicine – General Practice Residency (GPR)
The FHMC Department of Dental Medicine offers a fully accredited, CODA‑approved, one‑year General Practice Residency (GPR) program in a new, state‑of‑the‑art facility. Our recently built 3,350‑square‑foot dental center features eight spacious operatories, advanced imaging technology, iTero 5D+ scanners, and an on‑site Glidewell milling machine.
We do not have specialty residency programs, nor do we host rotating specialty residents. This structure allows our GPR residents extensive hands‑on experience. Under appropriate supervision and specialty training, residents are encouraged to scan, mill restorations, and place implants.
The program includes a comprehensive didactic curriculum featuring presentations developed by our faculty, the ADA, and the ACD, covering topics such as implant overdentures, advanced restorative dentistry, and practice management. Outside speakers also present on career preparation, life after residency, and professional development.
FHMC serves a patient population of more than 200,000 lives, with a strong emphasis on both high‑quality care and compassion.
Rotations
Residents rotate through multiple hospital services, including:
- 3 weeks in Anesthesia
- 2 weeks in Internal Medicine
- 2 weeks in Emergency Medicine
- 1 week in General Surgery
- 1 day in Pathology
Community service opportunities are also available.
Faculty and Clinical Experience
Our department includes:
- 3 Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons
- 1 Periodontist
- 1 Endodontist
- 3 Pediatric Dentists
- 15 General Dentists, including the Program Director and Clinical Director
Supported by exceptional assistants and staff, residents perform a wide range of procedures, including first and second molar endodontics, surgical extractions, impactions, implant dentistry, Invisalign®, and comprehensive fixed and removable prosthodontics. Additional educational activities include case presentations, journal club, ethics discussions, job‑search guidance, debt and wealth management, and hands‑on implant training.
This is a fast‑paced, rigorous program designed to prepare residents for the next stage of their careers in just one year. If you seek extensive clinical experience and aspire to be the best version of yourself, this program may be an ideal fit.
We value professionalism, punctuality, self‑motivation, and teamwork. Our strong sense of community extends beyond residency, and we maintain close relationships with our graduates long after they complete the program.
Upon successful completion of the residency, participants are awarded a Certificate in General Dentistry.
