Dr. Sercan Akyalcin is the Program Director of Harvard School of Dental Medicine's Advanced Graduate Education Program in Orthodontics. The Graduate Orthodontics Program focuses on providing our students with the knowledge and skills necessary to carry out ethical, patient-centered, evidence-based orthodontic treatment. In addition, our aim is to graduate specialists who possess advanced technical skills, a comprehensive scientific foundation, a thirst for knowledge, and the capacity to become strong leaders in orthodontics education and research.
The program places equal emphasis on clinical ability, research skills, and leadership capacity. Admission to the program is highly competitive.
The program tracks: Certificate and Master of Medical Sciences (MMSc), Certificate and Doctor of Medical Sciences (DMSc).

Letters of Evaluation Instructions
If you do not have an Institution Evaluation Form from your Dean's office, we will accept an IEF from a program you did after dental school; such as a specialty program. The evaluation can also be from a Principal Investigator.
One of the PEFs must be from your most recent academic director and/or employer (if applicable).
TOEFL Requirement Instructions
All applicants must submit official TOEFL scores from a test taken within the past two years and the exam can only be waived if BOTH the bachelor's degree and dental degree were obtained in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, or the United Kingdom. The minimum acceptable overall score is 95, with subcategory score minimums in the following areas:
- Reading 21
- Listening 17
- Speaking 24
- Writing 25
*All subcategory minimum scores must be satisfied.
Other Requirement Instructions
Please note that all applicants to the Orthodontics program are required to submit official GRE scores. Scores should be sent directly to the AGE Office of Admissions from ETS. HSDM’s institution code is 3430.
Official NBDE/INBDE scores are not required at the point of application, but must be submitted prior to matriculation. Scores are required for all applicants.
Supplemental applications must be submitted directly to AGE Admissions.

Interview Schedule
Invitations for the interview will be sent in mid-September. We usually conduct our interviews in October or November.
The interview requires a single business day. We suggest flying the day before to attend a social event with our residents in the evening before the interview.
Additional Information
Applicants may apply to one program per academic year. HSDM will not consider applicants for multiple programs.
NOTE: Please do not submit any of the following to HSDM: transcripts, resumes/CVs, letter of recommendation, portfolios, research papers, etc. All materials submitted to PASS will suffice for the application process.
