Program Contact
The Howard University College of Dentistry (HUCD) Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency program is a one-year (no optional second year), certificate-granting, tuition-based course of study and development which offers the newly or recently graduated dentist (graduated within the last two years preceding the year of application) an opportunity to expand the capability to provide quality comprehensive clinical care to diverse clientele populations. Consistent with Howard University’s Mission and Core Values, we place particular emphasis on opportunities for Black students and the development of professionals who will engage in solutions to contemporary global problems, particularly ones impacting the African Diaspora.
Learners are exposed to a broad range of meaningful clinical experiences guided by engaged faculty mentors who provide coaching, assessment, and feedback. Diagnostic and clinical techniques are bolstered with technologies such as electronic health record, digital radiography and cone beam computerized tomography, rotary endodontics, intraoral laser, and digital intraoral impressions, and residents meet patient multidisciplinary needs with procedures including emergency procedures such as incision and drainage, periodontal surgery, adult endodontics and endodontic treatment of pediatric permanent dentition (Pediatric Dentistry resident provides sedation as needed), surgical extractions, crown and bridge, and implant placement and restoration.
Most clinical services are provided within the in-house HUCD AEGD Clinic and rotations through the HUCD Emergency Services Clinic. External rotation sites include the Howard University Hospital (HUH) Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) Clinic and a local community-based general dentistry clinic for low-income clientele. Residents additionally experience service-based learning via pro bono clinical opportunities in Maryland and Virginia.
The didactic curriculum is robust, supporting the oral-systemic association and oral health as integral to total health. Classes include General Dentistry, Periodontics, OMS, Physical Examination, Epidemiology, Advanced Radiology, Histopathology, Internal Medicine, and Pharmacology, with most employing varying degrees of case-based learning and resident-run presentations. AEGD residents also benefit from collaboration with resident peers in the HUCD Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Practice Residency, and OMS programs. The program maintains full accreditation status with the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation.
Knowledge and clinical competency are reinforced across the spectrum of comprehensive dentistry, with the central philosophy of patient-centered, problem-based, phased treatment planning; the ability to thoroughly assess patients and then generate and execute predictable individualized plans is a foundational expectation for successful matriculation.
