The Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency program at the Howard University College of Dentistry (HUCD) is a one-year certificate-granting course of study (no optional second year) offering newly- or recently-graduated dentists (graduation no more than three years prior to the year of application) an opportunity to expand the capability to provide high-quality comprehensive clinical care to a diverse population. Consistent with Howard University’s Mission and Core Values, we welcome applicants of all backgrounds and also focus on creating opportunities for Black and other minority students and the development of professionals who will engage in solutions to contemporary global problems. The foundations of ethics, professionalism, compassion, and evidence-based practice are woven throughout our didactic and clinical activities.  The program is fully accredited with the American Dental Association (ADA) Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).

The program director is a graduate of a two-year AEGD residency program, a diplomate of the American Board of General Dentistry, and a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry. Residents additionally benefit from in-clinic weekly specialty faculty staffing (Prosthodontist, board-certified Periodontist) and ready access to in-house consultative specialty support (Endodontics, Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery/OMS).

We employ modalities such as electronic health record and digital radiography platforms, and complement “traditional” clinical techniques with rotary endodontics, intraoral laser, digital intraoral impressions with cloud-based transmission to laboratory, and cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) with digital workflow for implant treatment planning. Most clinical services are provided within our AEGD clinical space; additional rotation sites include the HUCD Emergency Services Clinic, Howard University Hospital (OMS, Anesthesia) and a local community-based general dentistry clinic for low-income and uninsured clientele of primarily Hispanic background.

Clinical experiences are partnered with a robust didactic curriculum that includes biologic, diagnostic, and clinical sciences in both classroom and seminar formats, case-based learning and application of principles emphasized via various patient care conferences, literature reviews, resident-run topic vignettes, literature-based research presentations, and collaboration with resident peers in the HUCD Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontic & Dentofacial Orthopedics, OMS, and General Practice Residency programs.

We aim to enhance knowledge and clinical competency across the spectrum of comprehensive dentistry, with the central philosophy of patient-centered, problem-based, phased treatment planning. The ability to comprehensively assess patients and then generate and execute predictable individualized plans is an expectation for successful matriculation.
