General Information

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Howard University Hospital along with its participating hospitals provides the residents with a rich and varied experience through exposure to a broad spectrum of patients. The graduate will be prepared to function as a qualified practitioner of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the level expected of a board-certified surgeon. The resident’s education encompasses both didactic instruction in the basic and clinical sciences of all surgical diseases as well as instructions in procedural and operative techniques. The educational process will lead to an appropriate fund of knowledge, the ability to integrate the knowledge into clinical care and the development of sound clinical judgment.

 

General Information

 

The program will expose the residents to all essential content areas of oral and maxillofacial surgery. These areas are: dentoalveolar surgery, implants and reconstructive surgery, outpatient sedation, trauma, pathology, craniofacial anomalies, oral-facial infections, anesthesia and TMJ pathology and orthognathic surgery.

Residents will also have secondary exposure through rotations in medicine, emergency medicine, general surgery, surgical critical care, anesthesia, neurosurgery and plastic surgery. These rotations will provide a broad base education with comprehensive evaluation and treatment of the surgical patient. Research and literature review are an incorporated into the curriclum along with lecture presentations and educational forums.

Each resident is appointed for one year, the Program Director and the oral and maxillofacial surgery staff base reappointment and promotion on daily evaluations, scheduled examinations,scholarly activity and clinical performance and technical skills.. Residents are additionally evaluated based on professionalism and overall  surgical development and growth. Residents are given increasing responsibility while having available continuous supervisory help for patient management.          The Howard University Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program  is approved to accept three residents per year. The current twelve residents rotate to the Veterans Hospital. Washinton Hospital Center, Winchester Hospital, National Institutes of Health, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Childrens Hospital as well as off service rotations at Howard University Hospital. ATLS,ACLS and Pals are provided during the program. Successful comlpetion of the program yields a certificate of proficiency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
