The Johnston Memorial Hospital AEGD Program is a 12-month community-based program located in beautiful Abingdon, VA. It is designed to provide advanced general dentistry education in a multidisciplinary environment. The program faculty have over 250 years of combined private practice experience. The clinic has recently been renovated into a state-of-the-art facility and is the region’s largest Medicaid provider. Appalachian Highland Community Dental Center is a sliding fee scale safety net clinic that hosts three local mini-Mission of Mercy Projects annually.
Due to limited access to care in the region, our patient base has complex needs. Our residents are exposed to a broad scope of dentistry discussed at a weekly treatment planning seminar with faculty. This program includes daily access to mentors made up of successful practitioners; including specialists in Endodontics, Oral Surgery, Periodontics and Prosthodontics, who are committed to training our residents at the highest level. Our residents gain proficiency in all areas of general dentistry, training in preparing comprehensive treatment plans and experience delivering predictable dentistry using the latest in digital workflow. In addition, our AEGD program offers a rotation to a local private practice, where all competencies are performed and the daily operations of a private practice can be observed.
