Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans (LSU) offers a fully CODA-accredited six-year integrated Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery–MD residency accepting four residents per year. The program integrates comprehensive oral and maxillofacial surgery training with the MD degree from the LSU School of Medicine. LSU also offers a separate fully CODA-accredited four-year OMFS certificate residency accepting two residents per year, for a total of six categorical OMFS residents entering LSU New Orleans each year.
LSU OMFS is a high-volume, full-scope oral and maxillofacial surgery training program with a longstanding culture of early operative responsibility and progressive surgical autonomy summarized by the program's philosophy: “Cut Early. Cut Often.” Meaningful operative experience begins during the intern year and progresses throughout residency.
LSU OMFS logged 12,468 tracked procedures in 2026, with graduating chief residents averaging 1,222 logged cases. Clinical training encompasses the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery, including maxillofacial trauma, orthognathic surgery, cleft and craniofacial surgery, head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstruction, temporomandibular joint surgery, facial cosmetic surgery, advanced dentoalveolar and implant reconstruction, anesthesia, and perioperative management of medically complex patients.
LSU residents receive training associated with three Level I trauma centers: University Medical Center New Orleans, Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, and Carolinas Medical Center within the Atrium Health system in Charlotte, North Carolina.
LSU OMFS residents train with 23 oral and maxillofacial surgeons, including 8 full-time and 15 additional surgical faculty who actively participate in resident education, operative care, and clinical coverage across LSU training sites. Eight LSU OMFS faculty are fellowship-trained surgeons: three in Head and Neck Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction, three in Facial Cosmetic Surgery, one in Cleft and Craniofacial Surgery, and one in Craniomaxillofacial Trauma. In addition, four LSU OMFS faculty are board certified in Facial Cosmetic Surgery. This faculty provides advanced expertise across head and neck oncology, microvascular free-tissue reconstruction, facial cosmetic surgery, cleft and craniofacial surgery, craniomaxillofacial trauma, orthognathic surgery, TMJ surgery, and advanced dentoalveolar and implant reconstruction.
Research is a rapidly expanding component of LSU OMFS. The Department currently has 85 active research projects, including 45 projects that have received Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval and progressed into active investigation and data collection. Residents have opportunities to participate throughout the research process, including study development, data collection and analysis, scientific presentation, manuscript preparation, and publication.
Medical school tuition and associated fees are fully funded for residents in LSU's six-year OMFS–MD program. LSU OMFS also provides substantial additional resident educational benefits, including funding for USMLE examinations, the ABOMS Qualifying Examination, OMSITE, medical and dental licensing, required certifications, selected professional meetings and presentations, educational courses, and housing during selected away rotations.
According to the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery's published 2019–2025 program-specific examination results, Louisiana State University School of Dentistry–New Orleans achieved a 100% ABOMS Qualifying Examination success rate and 97% Oral Certifying Examination success rate.
LSU OMFS has a distinctive historical lineage. The Department can trace its clinical and educational origins through the dental and oral-surgical services of Charity Hospital of New Orleans to a documented hospital dental service in 1891, giving LSU one of the oldest—and arguably the oldest—departmental lineages in American oral and maxillofacial surgery. LSU became part of the early generation of American programs to establish an integrated six-year OMFS–MD training model in 1989.
The LSU Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery today encompasses more than 120 people across four divisions—Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, GPR/AEGD, Orofacial Pain, and Dental Anesthesiology—and includes the LSU School of Dentistry Ambulatory Surgery Center.
