Program Contact
The general program practice is a one-year program that trains six residents annually. The goal of the General Practice Residency program is to help the graduate dentist gain experience so that he/she may provide a high level of comprehensive dental care to patients with a variety of needs. Didactic and clinical skills are reinforced as our residents are trained in all aspects of dental care including prosthodontics, endothontics, orthodontics, periodontics, pedodontics, implantology, pain, anxiety control, myofacial pain dysfunction, TMJ dysfunction, oral surgery, management of the medically compromised and special needs patient, inpatient care/management, emergency room care, medical risk assessment, and physical diagnosis. In addition, residents participate in practice management activities and community service through their participation in health fairs and special school programs to help prevent and reduce the incidence of oral disease.
In addition, residents do a two week rotation in the Anesthesia Department where patient assessment, venipuncture, airway management, post-op assessment, pharmacology and sedation techniques are covered. The anesthesia rotation is followed by a two week Emergency room rotation where residents obtain experience in diagnosis, and managment of Medical emergencies. Residents are required to provide emergency room dental coverage on an ongoing rotating basis to further enrich their experience in the treatment and management of dental trauma and emergencies. At the end of the residency year, our residents will be competent to provide a high standard of care to their patient, which is beyond their school experience.
