Overview

The Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry (OMFS) at Massachusetts General Hospital offers a two-year Orofacial Pain Residency program. This program provides advanced training in orofacial pain, headache disorders and dental sleep medicine. The program consists of clinical training with program faculty and elective rotations through various related departments, including:

  • The Center for Pain Medicine
  • Physical Therapy
  • Head and Neck Imaging
  • Neurosurgery
  • Neurology
  • Division of Sleep Medicine
  • Behavioral Psychology
  • Faulkner Hospital Headache Center

Clinical training is supplemented by a comprehensive didactic program.

Goals of the Orofacial Pain Residency Program

  • A basic understanding of the mechanisms involving pain
  • A basic understanding of the anatomical, physiological, biological, pathophysiological, and medical processes involved with pain disorders of the head, face, and neck
  • An understanding of the field of orofacial pain and the epidemiologic characteristics of these syndromes
  • Competency in the examination and evaluation of orofacial pain patients
  • Competency in the diagnosis and management of the orofacial pain patient
  • Competency to coordinate care for orofacial pain patients either as a single clinician or within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Competency to evaluate outcomes of treatment for orofacial pain patients
  • Competency to develop and/or evaluate research projects in orofacial pain

Application Requirements

Required Standardized Tests

  • TOEFL - If your native language is not English, you must submit TOEFL scores from a test taken within the past five years.

Transcript Evaluation and Instructions

Official dental school transcripts are required. 

International transcripts must be evaluated by a credentialing service.
Admissions recommends the following Credentialing Services:

Letters of Evaluation Instructions

  • One Institution Evaluation Form (IEF) from the Dean’s office.
  • Three to five Professional Evaluation forms (PEF)

 

TOEFL Requirement Instructions

If your native language is not English, you must submit TOEFL scores from a test taken within the past five years.

The minimum acceptable overall score is 95, with subcategory score minimums of Reading 21, Listening 17, Speaking 24, and Writing 25.

The TOEFL exam can only be waived if BOTH bachelor’s and dental degrees are obtained in the United States, Canada, Australia, or the United Kingdom.

Other Requirement Instructions

Required:

  • Submit a personal statement outlining your academic and professional background and your motivation for pursuing a specialization in Orofacial Pain.
  • Submit an up-to-date CV.

Optional but recommended:

  • Unofficial copy of undergraduate transcript

  • INBDE Score Report or NBDE Part I and Part II

This program will consider applicants who graduated, or plan to graduate, from a non-CODA accredited dental school: Yes

Interview Schedule

Virtual interviews will be conducted via Microsoft Teams during the first two weeks of November 2025, with a final decision expected by November 15, 2025.

Additional Information

The program start date is dependent on the MGB GME Intern Orientation schedule and is subject to change. The start date for the 2025–2026 academic year is June 16, 2025.
