Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency
The Oral Surgery Residency Program at the Medical University of South Carolina is a 48-month fully accredited program which is clinically oriented and designed to train residents to astutely diagnose and treat conditions of the oral maxillofacial region.
The Oral Maxillofacial Surgery resident is involved in 18 months of training on medical and surgical services within the hospital: six months of general anesthesia and four months of general surgery. Rotations include training in neurosurgery, medicine, surgical and medical intensive/critical care, emergency medicine, and facial plastic surgery. General anesthesia training is scheduled within the first year of the residency. After this training, the resident gains extensive experience in ambulatory anesthesia, airway management, and analgesia.
Three hours each week are devoted to didactic seminars on a variety of subjects relative to oral surgery techniques, patient care, literature review, and resident education. A number of outstanding guest lecturers are scheduled throughout the year.
The Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Service is staffed by three oral surgeons on a full-time basis and several on a part-time basis. A variety of oral maxillofacial surgery conditions encompassing the full scope of the specialty are seen and treated.
The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program involves extensive training in management of maxillofacial trauma and injuries of soft and hard tissue. Residents gain extensive experience in management of severe odontogenic infections and treatment of facial fractures.
Residents are involved in a comprehensive reconstructive and dental implant program. The program covers the full scope of implantology including craniofacial implants, reconstructive bone grafting, and total dental rehabilitation. A staff maxillofacial prosthodontist, private practice participation, and collaboration with the Veterans Administration, provides restorative support and an extensive referral base.
Residents receive extensive training in orthognathic surgery. Collaboration with many orthodontists throughout the state provides a large variety of cases, experiences, and training. Participation in the Craniofacial Anomalies Clinic exposes residents to cleft palate patients and a variety of craniofacial syndromes.
The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program evaluates and treats patients with facial pain and temporomandibular joint disorders. Residents are exposed to all aspects of management and receive extensive training in surgical procedures of the TMJ.
The program evaluates and manages a large number of patients with pathology of the jaws and head and neck region. Residents gain experience with treatment, adaptive surgery, and subsequent reconstruction procedures.
Dr. Martin Steed joined the department in December 2013 and is the current Chair and Residency Program Director.
