Periodontics is a specialty which encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth and implants and the maintenance of health, function, and esthetics of these structures and tissues. At MUSC, our mission is to ensure our Graduate Post-Doctoral residents receive the didactic and clinical training required to become leaders in their respective communities and organized dentistry in their chosen specialty of Periodontology.
MUSC graduate periodontics is a 3-year program accredited by CODA. The graduate training includes the basic biological sciences, clinical procedures, research, and teaching of pre-doctoral students. Didactic training includes literature review and treatment planning seminars one half day per week.
The clinical component of this program includes:
· Comprehensive exams
· Nonsurgical periodontal therapy
· Surgical periodontal therapy (regenerative and resective)
· CBCTs
· Extractions, many with socket preservation
· Implant placement
· Preparation of sites for implant placement including: extraction of teeth, ridge augmentation, lateral window sinus lifts, and block grafting
· Peri-implantitis treatment
· IV and oral sedation
· Supportive periodontal therapy
Residents will also complete the MSD (Master of Science in Dentistry, College of Dental Medicine). The program and MSD require completion of a research project, a Thesis and defense of that Thesis. The Masters degree program is completed simultaneously with the clinical Certificate program and there is no option for a Certificate only program.
New residents begin the Post-Doctoral program July 1, and there is no option for part-time attendance. Residents are paid a stiped of $10,000 per year.
For international applicants: We are not accepting international applicants for the 2023 application cycle. We hope to be able to accept international applicants in future application cycles as we grow.
Please be sure to submit your application fee of $75.00 once you have completed your ADEA PASS application. We can only accept a personal check or cashier's checks. The check may be made payable to the Medical University of South Carolina. Please submit your check to:
