The Advanced Education Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is fully accredited by the Commission of Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. The program requires 48 months of full-time study.

Sponsored by the School of Dentistry, the program uses Metropolitan Nashville General Hospital for training.  Metropolitan Nashville General Hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

Basic Science Education in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is provided through the completion of structured didactic courses, seminars/conferences, or problem-solving, clinically oriented laboratories. Program-specific courses are integrated into clinical training to include Surgical Anatomy, Physiology, Clinical Pharmacology, Clinical Microbiology, and Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.

Clinical training and education requires a demonstration of competency in the coursework for:

  • physical diagnosis
  • clinical medicine and pathophysiology
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery didactic lectures
  • seminars/conferences

off-service assignments to Internal Medicine, Anesthesia, General Surgery to include sub-specialty surgery, and time in Clinical Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

This permits the residents to practice the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery on an outpatient, ambulatory, inpatient basis, and to teach, advance the profession, and engage in other forms of intellectual pursuits.

Eligibility and Requirements
Dentists who meet the following criteria are eligible for admission to this program, upon submission of the information listed. The Program admits only one (1) resident each academic term. The following information should be submitted to the program Director for review and then forwarded to the Selection Committee (Admissions Committee):

  • Degree from an institution in the United States accredited by the respective Commission on Dental Accreditation.
  • Official dental school transcript
  • Copy of Part II score on the National Board of Dental Examiners/INDBE
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation (one letter from the Dean of the School of Dentistry)
  • Appearance for personal interview
  • State of TN Dental License 
  • National Board of Medical Examiners® (NBME®) Comprehensive Basic Science Examination (CBSE) Scores
  • Personal Statement of Interest ompleted Program Application Form
