The GPR Program sponsored by Mercy Hospital St. Louis consists of 12 months of advanced training in clinical dentistry, conducted primarily within a hospital environment.  The level of instruction is consistent with that of post-graduate training and is designed to expand the depth of the graduates' knowledge and skills and to enable them to provide comprehensive oral health care to a wide range of patients.

The purpose of the program is to provide recent dental graduates with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of general medicine, oral disease, and diagnostic and therapeutic skills.  This program will provide opportunities to diagnose and treat oral diseases in medically compromised patients in order to appreciate the relationship between systemic illness and its effects on oral health.

Both didactic and clinical instructions are provided in the various disciplines of dentistry. This instruction is provided by the general practitioners and specialists. Approximately 75% of the residents' time is spent in direct delivery of oral health care. Residents spend this time in the Gertrude B. Busch Dental Clinic providing comprehensive care including but not limited to endodontics, fixed and removable prosthodontics with implants, operative dentistry, oral surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, and periodontics.

Off-service rotations may include the following: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Head & Neck Oncology, Psychiatry and Radiology. These rotations are intended to provide the resident with a thorough, broad-based educational experience.

General dentistry is also completed in the operating room under general anesthesia for children and adults with special needs and dental anxiety. While in the dental clinic, residents will provide care under the guidance of dental attendings and work one-on-one with a dental assistant and perform periodic exams with a hygienist. Practice management will also be a focus as the GPR program runs alongside a private practice within the hospital to prepare residents for all aspects of life after residency.
