The MetroHealth System focuses on providing better health outcomes to the underserved communities. A newly CODA-accredited AEGD residency at MetroHealth, starting July 2023, seeks recent DMD/DDS graduates who are innovative self-starters interested in dental public health for a one-year (with optional two-year) residency.
This program provides a robust learning environment with clinically oriented experiences and advanced didactic training in all areas of dentistry. Our Broadway FQHC Dental Clinic serves as the primary training location. There is an emphasis on patient-centered care.
There are two, one-month rotations to our traditional Dental Clinic (Ohio City), a facility that treats medically-complex patients—as well as a one-month immersive rotation in Pediatric Dentistry (Ohio City) and another one-month rotation in the Oral Surgery Clinic (MetroHealth Main Campus). We seek to train future leaders in Public Health Dentistry. Candidates seeking additional clinical training prior to pursuing specialty training (i.e., Pedo, Endo, OMFS, etc.) are also encouraged to apply.
The program’s didactic activities support the clinical training and emphasize patient management and treatment planning. The didactic sessions include an emphasis on Treatment Planning Seminars, in addition to Literature Reviews, Journal club presentations, Conservative Dentistry, Endodontics, Fixed Prosthodontics, Removable Prosthodontics, Periodontics, Medically Compromised Dentistry, Implantology, Practice Management topics and Coding, and Dental Ethics lectures. Interdisciplinary resident presentations allow for residents in both years to learn from each other and gain experience in teaching others and presenting an in-depth analysis of completed patient cases. Residents also may attend continuing education courses and national conferences. The didactic sessions for the second year includes more advanced topics than in the first year, especially in Occlusion, TMJ problems, Implants, and dealing with RCT complications and re-treatments.
The MetroHealth AEGD experience will allow residents to:
- Enhance their clinical skills in all dental procedures.
- Treat a broad range of patients with many different backgrounds.
- Access advanced didactic training in all areas of dentistry.
- Experience “real-world” medical/dental integration (through the use of Metro’s EHR).
- Better understand the “whole patient” (on medical and psychosocial levels).
- Learn about Quality Improvement and help solve system-level issues, such as access to care.
- Become a patient advocate for better systemic and oral health outcomes.
- Enhance their prevention-focused oral health communication.
The AEGD Program at MetroHealth Medical Center is a stipend program. Applicants are not responsible for any type of payment to attend the program.

Letters of Evaluation Instructions
Dean's letter if the candidate did not graduate yet. The Dean's letter is an integral part of the application. The dean's letter lets us know that you are, indeed, on track to graduate on time and therefore should be expected to start your residency on time.
Original letter of reference from a Dental School Instructor, Researcher or Clinician that is not more than one year old. We require two letters of recommendation.
TOEFL Requirement Instructions
You have to take the TOEFL exam if all of your education was from a country whose official language is not English.
