Nassau University Medical Center ("NUMC"), a Level 1 trauma center, is a nationally accredited teaching hospital located in Nassau County, Long Island, less than 30 miles east of Manhattan.  The mission of the General Dentistry Residency training program at NUMC is to provide post-graduate level instruction and practice in all areas of dentistry in order to faciliate the development of responsible, ethical and experienced professionals who will be both competent and comfortable entering the private and/or public health care sector upon completion of the program.

The main goals of the General Practice Residency program at NUMC are to:

i) continue to expand upon the skills acquired in dental school
ii) facilitate the development of confidence and speed in both clinical skills and treatment planning
iii) communicate effectively with and work closely within a multi-disciplinary health care team
iv) expose the resident to a diverse patient population, including inpatients and patients with special needs.

During this one-year program, the resident will work closely on the clinic floor with specialists from all disciplines, including but not limited to endodontics, oral surgery, pedodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics and orthodontics.  The didactic training consists of weekly lectures given by specialists and general dentistry faculty, case presentations, and literature reviews.  Because Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the only other post-graduate dental residency programs sponsored by NUMC, the general practice residents are offered the unique opportunity to handle complex cases as first-year residents.  Such cases include treatment planning and restoration of implants, full-mouth dental rehabilitation, orthodontic cases (including wire and bracket placement by the resident), and dentistry in an operating room setting, with the patient under general anesthesia.
