The one-year program in general dentistry & the optional second year at NYPBMH are designed to provide training along with hospital experience following graduation. The program develops the residents' ability to interact with other health care professionals. It will foster the pursuit of individual areas of interest and enhance the achievement of career and professional goals.
The goals of the GPR at NYPBMH include:
Resident Education: To develop competency in general dentistry with an emphasis on oral diagnosis, treatment planning, & comprehensive care. Residents are prepared to provide care as a member of the hospital team & to differentiate treatment responsibility for the in-patient, ambulatory patient, & emergency patient. It is expected that the resident will be able to perform specialty procedures & multi-disciplinary care within the scope of general practice. The program requires participation in literature reviews, poster presentations, treatment planning & case presentations. There are weekly distance learning assignments with video presentations & reading assignments along with live presentations.
Patient Care: The program will prepare the dental resident to evaluate, diagnose, and implement oral health care for patients who present with medical risks as well as patients who present with oral facial trauma, infection & pain. It is expected that the resident will be able to communicate with their medical colleagues on the needs of their patients. Graduates are expected to manage comprehensive dental care as the leader of a team of dental specialists & physicians.
Community Service: The resident should develop greater understanding of the needs of the local community & be motivated to provide care to all members of the global community.
Oral healthcare is provided to patients of all ages & ranges from immediate emergency care through complex, multidisciplinary treatment. Care is supervised by GPs and board-certified specialists. There is advanced training in: treatment planning, periodontics, pediatric dentistry, operative dentistry, orthodontics, fixed & removable prosthodontics, endodontics, oral surgery, implant dentistry, & oral medicine.
The resident is required to fulfill rotations in anesthesia, medicine, radiation oncology, surgery & emergency medicine. Interactions with other departments in the hospital builds the residents confidence & enhances the hospital experience.
Dental Medicine is managed with a confirmed appointment schedule. Hours on Monday, Tuesday & Thursday are 8am to 9pm. On Wednesday, Friday & Saturday clinic hours are 8am to 5pm. Weekly clinic assignments are either M, W, F or Tu, Th, Sat. Residents are expected to be on call once weekly in July & 2 to 3 times monthly for the remainder of the year.
The program has an optional second year available. The training provided during the second year allows the resident to undertake more complex cases. There are expanded clinical opportunities & administrative responsibilities.
