The Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology residency at New York-Presbyterian Queens (NYPQ) is a 3-year program. Residents are trained to be surgical oral pathologists, lecturers, clinicians in clinical oral pathology and learn basic research skills. The small student to faculty ratio allows for individual attention. The hospital-oriented perspective exposes the resident to different career possibilities in oral pathology. NYPQ 's diverse patient population provides residents with
exposure to a variety of clinical entities, presenting them with unique clinical-pathologic research opportunities. The source of the pathologic educational material is the Oral Pathology Laboratory, Inc, based in NYPQ, which diagnoses over 17,000 cases a year. The program is approved by the CODA and qualifies the resident to sit for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology examination. Upon completion of the residency, the trainee is awarded a certificate and is eligible for NY State dental licensure.
The program prepares the trainee:
To understand and correlate gross and microscopic characteristics of biopsy and resection specimens and
generate accurate diagnoses
To direct an oral pathology biopsy service
To teach oral pathology to dental students, dental residents, and oral and maxillofacial surgery
residents
To present case reports at hospital conferences and tumor boards
To perform clinicopathologic correlative research
To prepare papers for publication in peer reviewed journals
To diagnose and treat oral mucosal diseases including vesiculobullous diseases, infectious disease, drug reactions, premalignant and malignant lesions and the oral manifestations of systemic diseases
Curriculum Overview:
Residents spend 36 months in the training program. Six months are in an Anatomic Pathology rotation
at New York University Medical Center. The rotation includes surgical pathology, bone and soft tissue
pathology, hematopathology, autopsy pathology, cytology, neuropathology, microbiology and
molecular pathology. There is an additional 4-week rotation in dermatopathology at NYPH-Cornell
Campus.
While in the Oral Pathology, residents are afforded the opportunity to view over 17,000 specimens
submitted by dental and medical colleagues. Individual teaching and small group sign out sessions are
held daily.
The Clinical component includes participation in: Weekly Oral Medicine Clinic, In Patient-Hospital
Consultations and Internal Medicine, Infectious Disease, Radiology and Interventional Radiology
rotations. Upon completion, residents achieve a level of confidence and competence when working with medical colleagues. Residents learn proper history taking, oral examination, documentation, prescription writing and oral cytology and soft tissue biopsy techniques. Residents are encouraged to attend local and national conferences.
Attendance and travel are supported by the institution. They receive competitive salaries, educational stipends, and additional benefits.
