The Advanced Education Program in Periodontics provides a broad educational and clinical experience consisting of a 36-month curriculum leading to a certificate of training in Periodontics. The primary goals of the program are to:

  1. Provide a foundation in the clinical, behavioral, and biomedical sciences that will enable the post-graduate student to diagnose, manage, and/or prevent diseases, abnormalities, and structural conditions affecting the periodontal tissues.

  2. Engender the role of the specialist as an integral and integrated member of the health professions team.

  3. Encourage post-graduate students to participate in dental education and to develop a philosophy of lifelong learning.

  4. Prepare post-graduate students to successfully qualify for the written and clinical components of the American Board of Periodontology (ABP) Examination.

The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association and fulfills all requirements for board eligibility as stated by the American Academy of Periodontology.

Transcript Evaluation and Instructions

  • Official dental school transcript, must be sent directly to ADEA PASS.
  • During the admissions process, please do not submit any official documents or score reports to NYU Dentistry, they will be requested upon admission to the program.

Letters of Evaluation Instructions

  • Three (3) letters of recommendation, including the Dean's Evaluation.

TOEFL Requirement Instructions

  • Required only for foreign trained dentists.

Background Check

Prior to matriculation, all students admitted to NYU Dentistry must complete a criminal background check, the results of which must be satisfactory. Learn more about the process from ADEA PASS.

Please send the following to ADEA PASS:

  • A personal essay.
  • National Board Dental Examination Parts I and II (NBDE) or the Integrated Board Dental Examination (INBDE) scores must be reported on the Dean’s Evaluation, or reported directly to PASS from the ADA.
    • For applicants who have passed the NBDE Part I, Part II must be passed before joining the program, but it is not required for the review process.
    • For applicants who took or will take the INDBE exam, it must be passed before joining the program, but it is not required for the review process.
  • The Advanced Dental Admission Test (ADAT) exam is accepted, but not required.

Please send the following to NYU Dentistry:

  • A non-refundable supplemental application-processing fee of $100.00 (USD) is required to complete your application. Once the application is received from ADEA PASS, you will receive an email with instructions to submit the application fee.

    Please Note: The $100 (USD) non-refundable supplemental application-processing fee is separate from PASS service fees.

Payment Guidlines for Canadian and Non-U.S. Applicants:

  • The $100 (USD) non-refundable application-processing fee must be in U.S. dollars and may be paid by either money order or a check. If paying by check, please note that the check must meet all of the following criteria:
  • Checks must have a pre-printed denotation stating the check is being drawn from U.S. funds. Please keep in mind that this means that U.S. funds cannot be handwritten by the account holder.
  • The check must have a 9-digit U.S. routing number, usually located at the bottom of the check.
  • The bank from which you are drafting the check must have an affiliated branch located in the U.S.
  • The affiliated U.S. bank address must be pre-printed on the check.

Additional Information

International Applicant Requirements:

The following are in addition to the instructions stated above.

  • Three (3) letters of recommendation, including the Dean's Evaluation.
  • An official ECE course-by-course evaluation must be reported directly to PASS. We do not accept evaluations from WES or any other evaluating institutions.
  • ADAT exam is accepted, but not required.
  • National Board Dental Examination Parts I and II (NBDE) or the Integrated Board Dental Examination (INBDE) scores must be reported on the Dean’s Evaluation, or reported directly to PASS from the ADA. The INBDE and NBDE Part I & Part II must be passed prior to the scheduling of an interview.
  •  All international applicants are required to take the TOEFL iBT exam to be considered for admission. The minimum required score is 100. No exceptions will be made.
    Scores must be reported directly to PASS from ETS. IELTS or any other English exam are not accepted. The TOEFL exam will not be waived and we do not accept the "My Best Scores" result and/or the new TOEFL Essential
    The TOEFL exam is valid for two years only and must not expire before the application deadline or before the program start date (July 1st). If the exam expires before the deadline or before the Program start date, the exam must be retaken and the official score must be submitted before the deadline.
  • During the admission process, please do not submit any official documents or score reports to NYU Dentistry, they will be requested upon admission to the program.
