Program Contact
The Department of Orthodontics offers a 36-month, combined Certificate / Master of Science degree program. The postdoctoral training program is accredited by the Comission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and is designed to fulfill the specialty certification requirements of the American Board of Orthodontics, with an emphasis on clinical training.
Comprehensive lectures in the relevant basic sciences, as well as, seminars and case conferences in the clinical art and science of orthodontics, comprise the didactic component of the program. The program's clinical component includes treatment of adults, adolescents, and children to enable the student to gain knowledge and develop proficiency in the use of basic edgewise and other appliances. Interdisciplinary conferences and coordinated treatment procedures of complex cases with postdoctoral endodontic, periodontic and prosthodontic students are part of the educational experience. Analysis and treatment of orthognathic surgery and craniofacial anomaly cases are part of the program.
The Master of Science research / thesis requirement is an important component of our postgraduate educational program. In addition to participating in a meaningful educational experience, the research / thesis enterprise allows students to further develop analytic, organizational, and critical reading and writing skills. As such, the Master of Science program is instrumental in promoting student achievement framed by an evidenced-based learning approach. Applicants accepted into the Orthodontic Certificate program must apply to the Master of Science Degree program upon matriculation. Orthodontic residents will be required to complete the Master of Science degree in order to receive their certificate and will be responsible for all additional fees associated with attaining the master's degrees.
