Program Contact
Overview: The NYU Langone Dental Medicine Pediatric Dentistry (PEDS) Program is a 24-month hospital- and health-center based education program that provides a strong didactic and clinical foundation in Pediatric Dentistry. Founded in 1994, by Dr. Silvia Perez-Spiess in Brooklyn, NY, the program is fully accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). The curriculum emphasizes pediatric medicine and dentistry, behavioral and pharmacologic management of children, oral biology, conscious sedation and general anesthesia for both the well child and those with special health care needs. Residents train with specialists in all disciplines of dentistry including orthodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, endodontics and dental anesthesia and develop expertise in treating patients.
This innovative program is a hybrid blend of a strong distance learning didactic curriculum and extensive clinical experience. Distance-based didactic learning is achieved through asynchronous web-based education modules and a state-of-the-art video teleconference system that connects residents and faculty across all sites. With ample clinical exposure to pediatric medicine, conscious sedation and general anesthesia, graduates are trained to be an integral part of the medical team and hospital environment. Additional experience in hospital dentistry, craniofacial conditions, interceptive orthodontics, research, ethics and policy advocacy successfully prepares the graduate to pursue a career in private practice, public/community health or academia.
PEDS Curriculum: In Year 1, residents study most of the core curriculum, completing biomedical courses including oral biology, pediatric anesthesia, physical diagnosis, behavioral management, pediatric dentistry series, orthodontics, craniofacial development, and research methods and materials. Residents in NY attend monthly craniofacial conferences in their second year. Courses, electives, and requirements include core public health subjects. First-year residents also are assigned multiple rotations including pediatric medicine, general anesthesia, emergency medicine, and on-call services.
In the second year, the curriculum is focused on children with complex medical conditions. Second-year residents may be assigned with pediatric specialists to work in areas such as hematology, oncology, endocrinology, neurology, pulmonology, nephrology, cardiology, and immunology. Residents may rotate through nearby community health centers, Head Start/early child care centers or school-based programs to extend direct patient care to underserved children in the community.
NYU Langone Dental Medicine- Brooklyn:
The NYU Langone Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry program -Brooklyn site operates within The Health Centers at NYU Langone and offers a comprehensive and rigorous training program in one of the most dynamic and diverse cities in the world. Unique as a health center located within NYU Langone Medical Center, a level-1 trauma hospital, the site serves the community’s oral health needs across multiple Brooklyn neighborhoods, including Sunset Park, Park Ridge, Park Slope, Brooklyn Chinatown, Flatbush, and Seventh Avenue family health centers. Residents gain experience working alongside faculty mentors and have access to 28 dental operatories and operating rooms across the medical center and Brooklyn.
Pediatric dental residents provide care to a large, underserved, and diverse patient population, collaborating closely with a multidisciplinary team of anesthesiologists, endodontists, periodontists, oral surgeons, general dentists, orthodontists, and other medical providers to ensure comprehensive care. The Brooklyn site collaborates with other postdoctoral residency programs such as Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD), GPR, Dental Anesthesiology, and Endodontics, enriching the multidisciplinary training environment.
The site includes training in oral conscious sedation—performed onsite under the supervision of dental anesthesiologists and pediatric dentists and is approved with New York State to obtain a NY permit on graduation when meeting all requirements. General anesthesia cases are conducted in the operating room with dental or medical anesthesiologists and pediatric dentists. Residents also rotate through Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Medicine and attend craniofacial team meetings. The resident rotate to NYU College of Dental Medicine review literature and help teach students.
Residents provide care during extended hours, including nights, weekends, and on-call shifts, improving access for the patient population served and educational experiences for the residents. Each resident is paired with a dental assistant to manage a substantial patient load effectively.
Graduates leave the program culturally competent and well-prepared to treat diverse and complex pediatric dental cases across a variety of clinical settings.
Strengths: American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD) Outcomes: Second year residents are required to take the ABPD Qualifying Examination (QE), the first of a two-part ABPD certification process. Over 90% of NYU Langone PEDS residents pass the QE (national average 85%). More than 70% of graduates become board-certified diplomates of the ABPD (national average 65%).
Research: Residents must complete a research project and, in Year 2, present their research posters at the annual AAPD meeting. The best research projects are also presented at the annual Research Fair in Brooklyn, NY.
Residents also are provided the opportunity to network with other programs. Residents collaborate with NYU faculty and residents for literature review, OR cases, and teaching rotations. Residents attend Craniofacial Team meetings and lectures at both NYU Langone Manhattan campus and Columbia University. Residents of this site are exposed to board-certified faculty with varied backgrounds in private practice, public health, and education. Residents participate in a hospital research fair in which all departments, including PGY2 pediatric dental residents, present posters. Residents also participate in local seminars, lectures and case presentations.
