Description
The Olin E. Teague Veterans Center in Temple, Texas is a major component of the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System. The dental service offers an Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency. The 12-month program offers extensive training in oral diagnostics, radiology, restorative dentistry, periodontics, endodontics, prosthodontics, general oral surgery and moderate intravenous conscious sedation. Residents also receive training and practical experience in the surgical placement and restoration of endosteal dental implants. The AEGD residency accepts anywhere from two to three residents annually. The residency program is accredited fully by the American Dental Association and the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
Program Overview
The Olin E. Teague Veterans Center is in Temple, a city in central Texas, with a population of almost 75,000. It is situated 65 miles north of Austin and 36 miles south of Waco, along Interstate 35, and is centered approximately within a triangle formed by Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas-Ft. Worth.
The Olin E. Teague Veterans Center is part of the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS) with facilities located in Austin, Waco and here in Temple. The Doris Miller VA Medical Center in Waco is primarily a psychiatric facility, and the VA Clinic in Austin is mainly an outpatient clinic. All training phases of the AEGD residency program take place within the Temple VA facility. The Olin E. Teague Veterans Center contains a 269-bed general medical and surgical center, a 408-bed domiciliary and a 272-bed nursing home care unit.
The small-town atmosphere that Temple provides allows residents to form close relationships with faculty and consultants, as well as with other dental and medical residents. Our medical center has many ancillary facilities including an excellent medical library, a medical media production service, and a research department.
Clinical Facilities
Our dental clinic is equipped with fifteen operatories which are utilized by dental, dental hygiene and digital radiology departments. All dental units and equipment are of modern design. Two dental laboratory technicians work at the Temple VA facility, and three technicians service the Waco VA facility. A complete audiovisual and videotape library is present at the Temple VA facility.
