The Oregon Health & Science University offers a six-year program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery that leads to a certificate in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, as well as a medical degree from OHSU School of Medicine. The goal of this program is to produce a compassionate and well-rounded Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon who is prepared to pursue any post-residency pathway – fellowship, private practice, or academic practice.

Clinical and didactic education and training takes place at the Oregon Health & Science University, Legacy Emanuel Medical Center Portland, and other affiliated institutions. Portland, Oregon is a beautiful Pacific Northwest city with a metropolitan population of over 2.45 million people.

Residents in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery gain extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of a wide variety of oral and maxillofacial conditions. These include correction of skeletofacial deformities, surgical management of the temporomandibular joint, pathology including oncologic surgery, cleft lip and palate surgery, and maxillofacial reconstruction including microvascular techniques, as well as many other aspects of surgery of the mouth, face and neck.

The curriculum in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery includes a step-wise progression, beginning with the more fundamental knowledge of medical school first. The learner then progresses to anesthesia training, followed by the care of the general surgery patient.  With this foundational knowledge and skill in place, the second half of the program consists of three continuous years of OMS experience.  This curriculum minimizes disruption in surgical training and allows the learner to benefit from the knowledge that can only be gained through continuity of care.
