The Pediatric Dental Residency Program at Primary Children’s Hospital is a 24-month, fully accredited, hospital-based program, with an emphasis on clinical proficiency and the interdisciplinary approach to treatment of pediatric dental patients.

Primary Children’s Hospital, part of Intermountain Health, is an internationally recognized nonprofit health system headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah. Intermountain Health includes 34 hospitals, 385 clinics, one virtual hospital, and one hospital currently under construction. The system employs over 58,000 caregivers, including more than 5,000 physicians, and offers a broad range of services including specialty care, primary care, and health insurance through Select Health. It is the largest not-for-profit medical provider in the Intermountain West.

Primary Children’s Hospital is consistently ranked among the Top 20 Most Beautiful Hospitals in the United States and serves the pediatric healthcare needs of children across Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado. Intermountain Health is widely recognized as a national leader in clinical quality improvement and efficient healthcare delivery.

Located on the scenic University of Utah campus, Primary Children’s is part of a robust academic and healthcare ecosystem that includes graduate schools in medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, and other health-related disciplines. The hospital is a 289-bed quaternary care medical center and the only Level I Pediatric Trauma Center in the Intermountain West, serving a 400,000-square-mile region across six states. It is certified by the American College of Surgeons and emphasizes expert trauma care, research, education, and prevention.

In Spring 2024, Primary Children’s Hospital expanded its reach by opening a second hospital. This new 38-acre campus features 66 inpatient beds, a three-story medical office building, and a total of 486,000 square feet of clinical and administrative space. The pediatric dental residency program will have an increasingly important presence at this new facility, with responsibilities including emergency room coverage and general anesthesia case assignments, supporting continued growth and innovation in pediatric care.

The curriculum is designed to provide didactic and clinical instruction for the resident and an opportunity to develop proficiency with both primary and comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through early adolescence, including those with special health care needs. The program encourages the development of a critical and inquiring attitude necessary for the advancement of practice, research and teaching in pediatric dentistry.

Residents engage in scholarly activity which includes the participation in daily didactic seminars with attending faculty and completion of a clinical research project which utilizes data collection, analysis and elements of the scientific method.

The didactic and clinical program includes instruction in the following disciplines: Behavior Guidance; Oral/Nasal Sedation, IV Sedation and General Anesthesia; Biomedical Science; Comprehensive Dental Care; Growth and Development; Hospital Dentistry; Management of a Contemporary Dental Practice; Oral Diagnosis, Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine; Oral Facial Injury and Emergency Care; Orthodontics; Patients with Special Health Care Needs; Pharmacology; Prevention and Health Promotion; Pulp Therapy; Medical Emergencies; Board Exam Preparation

Pediatric dental residents play a vital role in the hospital’s Emergency Department, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to treat oral and facial infections and dental trauma. Their involvement is integral to the trauma service system and reflects the hospital’s commitment to comprehensive pediatric care.

Residents also particpate in a CODA-approved offsite private practice rotation.

This training environment will appeal to a future pediatric dentist who is interested in a career in clinical care as they interact with healthcare providers from many disciplines.
