The Pediatric Dental Residency Program at Primary Children’s Hospital is a 24-month, fully accredited, hospital-based program, with an emphasis on clinical proficiency and the interdisciplinary approach to treatment of pediatric dental patients.
Primary Children's Hospital is part of Intermountain Healthcare, an internationally recognized, nonprofit system based in Salt Lake City, Utah, with 24 hospitals, one virtual hospital, more than 225 clinics, approximately 2800 employed physicians, a broad range of clinics and services, and health insurance plans. Primary Children's serves the pediatric healthcare needs of Utah and additional states including Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona.
Primary Children’s Hospital is a 289-bed quaternary care medical center and the only Level I Pediatric Trauma Center serving a 400,000 square mile region across six states. It is ranked as one of the nation's best children's hospitals in 9 of 10 specialties in U.S. News & World Report’s 2022-23 Best Children’s Hospitals Ranking Report. The Trauma Service system emphasizes the delivery of expert care, research, education and prevention. Pediatric dental residents serve an important role in the Emergency Department with responsibilities to work alongside healthcare providers from many departments in the treatment of oral and facial infection and dental trauma.
Intermountain Healthcare has added a second Primary Children’s Hospital campus in Lehi, Utah in 2024. The 38-acre campus features 66 beds, and a three-story medical office building, with a combined 486,000 square feet.
The curriculum is designed to provide didactic and clinical instruction for the resident and an opportunity to develop proficiency with both primary and comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through early adolescence, including those with special health care needs. The program encourages the development of a critical and inquiring attitude necessary for the advancement of practice, research and teaching in pediatric dentistry.
Residents engage in scholarly activity which includes the participation in daily didactic seminars with attending faculty and completion of a clinical research project which utilizes data collection, analysis and elements of the scientific method.
The didactic and clinical program includes instruction in the following disciplines: Behavior Guidance; Oral/Nasal Sedation, IV Sedation and General Anesthesia; Biomedical Science; Comprehensive Dental Care; Growth and Development; Hospital Dentistry; Management of a Contemporary Dental Practice; Oral Diagnosis, Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine; Oral Facial Injury and Emergency Care; Orthodontics; Patients with Special Health Care Needs; Pharmacology; Prevention and Health Promotion; Pulp Therapy; Medical Emergencies; Board Exam Preparation
