Program Contact
The general practice residency in dentistry at Prisma Health is fully accredited by the American Dental Association. It is a one-year certificate program designed to develop essential clinical skills, attitudes, judgement and abilities related to the comprehensive practice of dentistry. The program also is structured to provide training in the management of medically, physically and mentally compromised patients in a hospital environment. In addition to training in general dentistry, the resident will participate in rotations in anesthesia and emergency medicine.
Dentists entering this program can expect to receive advanced training in... *Diagnosis and treatment planning *Fixed and removable prosthodontics *Implant dentistry *Restorative dentistry *Endodontics *Periodontics *Conscious sedation *Oral and maxillofacial surgery *Pediatric dentistry
The residency is clinically oriented with much time devoted to areas of training where limited experience is available in dental school. About 85 percent of the resident's time is spent providing dental care. The remaining time is devoted to medical rotations and various nonclinical didactic experiences. Patient treatment is provided at Prisma Health, Dorn Veterans Administration Hospital and Richland/Lexington County Adult/Children's Dental Clinics. Each of these clinical settings is unique and has a specific emphasis that helps provide the resident with a well-rounded experience. The majority of clinical training occurs at the Prisma Health Richland campus.
