The General Practice Residency Program
NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens supports a one-year General Practice Residency Program that is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. The program accepts six GPR residents from CODA accredited dental schools from across the nation.
Residents act as the primary provider in delivering preventative and comprehensive oral health care, including treating dental emergencies. Clinical care is provided to patients under the supervision of general and specialty attendings in both the out-patient and in-patient setting. The Dental Department is open Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm; all after-hours call are taken by pagers.
Residents are provided a robust didactic schedule that includes lectures, literature reviews and case presentations to expand their clinical knowledge. Additionally, residents rotate through our Emergency Medicine and Anesthesia Departments for a total of 80 hours each. In the Emergency Department, residents obtain and interpret chief complaints, clinical findings and other diagnostic data in order to establish a medical assessment. In the Anesthesia Department, residents conduct preoperative assessments, patient monitoring, recognition and understanding of pharmacological agents and assessment of patient recovery.
