The Pediatric Dental Residency Program at St. Barnabas Hospital (SBH Health System) was founded in 1995 and is fully accredited by the ADA Commission on Dental Education. SBH Health System is a Trauma Center in Bronx, New York.
The program offers comprehensive clinical and didactic training in all areas of pediatric dentistry including: restorative dentistry, pediatric endodontic techniques, behavior management (pharmacological and non-pharmacological), orthodontics, oral surgery, prosthodontics, oral sedation, intravenous sedation, pediatric medicine, trauma management, medically complex patient management, and treatment under general anesthesia. Residents gain in depth experience managing those with Special Healthcare Needs (SHCN) through a weekly rotation at the Children's Evaluation & Rehabilitation Center, located at the nearby Rose F. Kennedy Center.
The program promotes outreach to: local pediatricians, local head start programs, Women's, Infant's, & Children's (WIC) programs, local schools (grade, middle, & high school levels), and The Bronx Zoo. Residents are also encouraged to participate with international outreach programs.
Practice management is an important core component of the program. Every SBH Pediatric Dental attending is actively involved in delivering pediatric dental care in private practice, in addition to their hospital responsibilities. Attendings bring these private practice experiences into their everyday instruction. This approach, in addition to in-depth preparation the Board Examination process (by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry) fosters a truly comprehensive residency experience.
The dental department at SBH offers an Orthodontic Residency Program, General Practice Residency Program, and Dental Anesthesia Program. Residents also work closely throughout the hospital- with active rotations in the Pediatric Emergency Department, Pediatric Outpatient and Inpatient Clinics, and Medical Anesthesia.
Education of the residents is one of the primary missions of the program. The program's residents have received accolades for outstanding performance on the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry's Examination process, Research Awards, and educators. Several of the program's alumni have gone on to become pediatric residency program directors themselves. During these unprecedented times, the goal of the program remains the same: to graduate competent, knowledgeable, skilled, and compassionate specialists prepared to deliver appropriate care to the pediatric population.
