APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Application to the Advanced Prosthodontic Program is managed by the PASS centralized application service. All inquiries about your application should be made to that office as well. The PASS deadline is August 15.
All residency applicants are also required to register with the National Matching Service. The Match is used by applicants and programs to determine the final placement of applicants into positions after the application and evaluation process is completed.
The application deadline for any additional materials along with application fee ($50 - https://go.osu.edu/dentprosthoresidentfee) required by the program is September 1 for the entering class that will begin studies following year. All materials should be emailed to the program director at saponaroparra.1@osu.edu. Due to the time limitations the PASS has set up, we feel this deadline is necessary so that all applicants can be considered equally. Only applicants with completed applications will be evaluated and considered for acceptance.
THE SELECTION PROCESS
Following the application deadline of August 15, all completed applications will be reviewed by the admissions committee for the program. Selected applicants will receive notification to appear for an interview. Following the interviews, selections will be made for the three resident positions available.
Any applicant who wishes to visit the program is encouraged to do so. However, please be aware that such a visit will not be considered an interview. Please send any questions about the program to the Director.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Ohio State University's College of Dentistry offers a comprehensive program in Advanced Prosthodontics and is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. The goal of the program is to assist motivated students in attaining excellence in clinical prosthodontics, prepare for careers in private practice, teaching and/or research, and become eligible for examination by the American Board of Prosthodontics.
The clinical component of the program includes all phases of prosthodontics:
1. fixed prosthodontics
2. implant prosthodontics
3. complete denture prosthodontics
4. maxillofacial prosthetics
5. removable partial prosthodontics
Didactic courses presented include:
1. dental ceramics
2. dental materials
3. fixed, removable, implant, and maxillofacial prosthodontics
4. head and neck anatomy
5. interdisciplinary relationships with residents in other specialties
6. occlusion and TMD
7. oral pathology
8. research design and statistics
9. implant surgery
Didactic courses are presented by means of lecture, seminar, literature review, demonstration and laboratory.
The 36-month program leads to a certificate of training in the specialty and also a Masters of Science degree. Research leading to a thesis or a manuscript suitable for publication is required for the Master's degree. Specific research time is made available to the resident to assist in the completion of the thesis research project.
While not mandatory, we suggest that the applicant have dental experience beyond dental school, i.e. private practice, member of the Armed Forces, Public Health Service, Department of Veterans Affairs, general practice residency, or a teaching experience in prosthodontics. This experience often makes the advancement to the graduate level a more meaningful transition. International applicants may apply and National Board scores are required for these applicants.
TUITION AND STIPEND
Residents are appointed as Graduate Teaching Associates. This appointment provides a stipend around $15,000 during the academic year. In addition, half of the in-state and non-resident tuition will be waived. This support can be renewed annually (to a maximum of three years) depending on availability of funds and on positive teaching outcomes as reviewed annually by the program director. U.S. citizens may be eligible to apply for Ohio residency status after their fourth semester at Ohio State. In-State tuition is around $21,000 and out-of-state and International student tuition is around $64,000 per year.
OTHER PROGRAM COSTS
Residents must provide certain laboratory and clinical instrumentation. You will be given a list of specific items such as an intra-oral camera, one semi-adjustable articulator and other instruments. The approximate cost for all can vary. Also, it is highly recommended that you have your own laptop computer, digital camera, articulator and waxing instruments.
