The Queen's Medical Center:
The Queen's Medical Center, then known as The Queen's Hospital, was founded in 1859 by Queen Emma and Alexander Liholiho (King Kamehameha IV), grandson of Kamehameha-the-Great. "Queen's," located in downtown Honolulu, is a private, non-profit, acute medical care facility licensed to operate with 505 acute care beds and 28 sub-acute beds. The Medical Center has more than 3,000 employees, over 1,200 physicians on staff and is the 13th largest corporation in Hawai'i. As the leading medical referral center in the Pacific Basin, Queen's offers a comprehensive range of primary and specialized care services, is accredited by the Joint Commission, is the designated Trauma Center of the State of Hawai'i and participates in residency training approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation.
GPR Program Overview:
The Queen's Medical Center General Practice Residency Program (GPR) is a one year (July 1 - June 30) two resident program. The Queen's Dental Clinic provides comprehensive dental care for the ethnically, culturally, and socially diverse population for the state of Hawai'i and Pacific Basin. Patients include those undergoing cancer therapy, organ transplant, and cardiac care as well as patients with special healthcare needs. The Director of Resident Education is supported in the clinical training of our residents by clinical dentists, academic dentists, and a cadre of volunteer private practice general dentists and specialists who all provide clinical mentorship and supervision, didactic instruction, treatment planning consultation, and after-hours emergency oversight. The program consists of rotations that include internal medicine, anesthesiology, head and neck oncology, radiation oncology, and emergency medicine.
Approximately 75% of the resident’s time is spent at The Queen’s Dental Clinic, practicing comprehensive dentistry in an out-patient setting. The remaining 25% is spent in structured rotations, didactic training, performing in-house consultations in support of various services throughout the Medical Center, as well as responding to cases admitted to the Emergency Department and performing operating room-based treatment in Same Day Surgery (SDS).
Dental residents are required to assume 24/7 after-hours emergency call on a week-long rotating basis. With two dental residents, this translates to each resident being on-call bi-weekly with every 5th week off. Residents must be available to be consulted by phone as well as prepared to present to the Medical Center to provide clinical intervention.
