Program Description: Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD)

The AEGD program is a one-year certificate program located in the School of Dentistry within the University of Mississippi Medical Center campus in Jackson, Mississippi.

Clinic  hours of operation are 8 am-5 pm, Monday to Friday except holidays. Additional time can be required of residents when in the OR or on call.

Residents rotate through various clinics/departments:

  1. Jackson Medical Mall Dental Clinic

  2. Anesthesia

  3. Emergency Department

  4. Night/Day call

  5. Operating room facility

Clinical experience includes medical and dental emergencies, simple and surgical exodontia, endodontic therapy including rotary endodontics, periodontal therapy including surgical experience, removable and fixed prosthodontics, and dental implant placement and restoration. The dental clinic  patients range in age from teenagers to geriatric populations, healthy to those with complex medical histories including patients needing cardiac surgery, organ transplant, and special needs patients.  Residents gain experience treating special needs patients in an operating room setting with most residents participating in more than a dozen cases during the program.  Our residents receive instruction from a team of five general dentists but also have the opportunity to work with specialists in endodontics, periodontics, and prosthodontics on a need basis.  Residents receive chairside assistance for the preponderance of their patient appointments. The department has two dental hygienists managing the recall system.  Patient care representatives schedule appointments for the residents.  A combination of in-house and private sector dental labs are utilized by the program for prosthodontic cases.

An average week for a resident includes 34-38 hours of clinical experience with 2-6 hours of didactic instruction.  Didactics include:

Journal club/Literature Review

Case presentations

Lectures/Seminars  from various health care providers.

To obtain a certificate requires a minimum of 11 months of training, a positive evaluation on all rotations, and completion of advanced cardiac life support during resident orientation.
