The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University is devoted to patient care, residency education and research. The department provides state-of-the-art care from the reconstruction of the maxillofacial region associated with tumor surgery and trauma, to the correction of dentofacial deformaties. Other areas of expertise include treatment and diagnosis of temporomandibular joint dysfunction, implantology, trauma surgery, head and neck cancer and microneurosurgery.

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency training program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is a four year program with a medical degree option or a six-year program with a medical degree. Research is directed toward clinical trials and the study of diseases of the oral mucosa and supporting structures. We accept applications for a one-year internship position throughout the year but do not start the interview process until after the match is completed in January.

  • Passing the INBDE before matriculation into the advanced dental education program
  • Non-US Citizen/Residents will be considered for sponsorship if you have graduated, or plan to graduate, with a DMD or DDS degree from a CODA-accredited dental school. Either 4 year or advanced standing will be considered. You do not need to be a US or Canadian citizen, but you MUST be eligible for an unrestricted Pennsylvania dental license.

Transcript Evaluation and Instructions

Please do not have encrypted transcripts sent by your undergraduate institution or dental school.  We can accept student copies for interview purposes as long as they are current.  If you do get order official transcripts, please have them sent to you so that you can scan and send to us.  Due to varying encryption rules when sending direct from your university, we often miss the deadlines to open them and it complicates matters.  Thank you for your help with this!

Letters of Evaluation Instructions

Three letters including your Dean's letter.  Additional letters are alllowed and may be emailed to the program or uploaded to PASS.   

Other Requirement Instructions

You do not need to be a U.S. or Canadian citizen, but you must have completed CODA-accredited dental school (either 4 year or advanced standing), and must be eligible for an unrestricted Pennsylvania dental license.  

Visa information- Jefferson Health sponsor H1-B and J1 visas solely at its discretion for residents entering graduate medical, dental and podiatric training programs.  Candidates who desire H1-B sponsorship must express that desire at the time of the program interview.  Candidates applying to any of the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital dental programs will be considered individually.  The Thomas Jefferson University Hospital dental programs will indicate in writing their desire to sponsor an H1-B visa.  Candidates must not construe verbal communication as evidence of any of the Jefferson Health program's desire to sponsor an H1-B visa.
