The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University is devoted to patient care, residency education, and research. The department provides state-of-the-art care from the reconstruction of the maxillofacial region associated with tumor surgery and trauma to the correction of dentofacial deformaties. Other areas of expertise include treatment and diagnosis of temporomandibular joint dysfunction, implantology, trauma surgery and microneurosurgery. The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency training program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is a four year program with a medical degree option or a six-year program with a medical degree. Research is directed toward clinical trials and the study of diseases of the oral mucosa and supporting structures. We accept applications for a one year internship position throughout the year but do not start the interview process until after the match is completed in January.

Transcript Evaluation and Instructions

Please electronically submit copies of your undergraduate transcripts and dental school transcripts to us or upload into PASS.  Please do NOT have them e-mailed to us from your school as we often are not able to open them in time to meet the encryption/decryption requirements.  If you request a copy from your school, please have them sent to you, open and save them, and then send us a scanned copy.  We are grateful for your assistance with this!

Letters of Evaluation Instructions

Three letters of evaluation are required, one of which must be a Dean's letter from your dental school.  You may submit additional letters as well.  

Other Requirement Instructions

Visa Information- Jefferson Health sponsors H1-B and J1 visas at its sole discretion for residents entering graduate medical, dental and podiatric training programs.  Candidates who desire H1-B sponsorship must express that desire at the time of the program interview.  Candidates applying to any of the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital dental programs will be considered individually.  The Thomas Jefferson University Hospital dental programs will indicate in writing their desire to sponsor an H1-B visa.  Candidates must not construe verbal communication as evidence of any Jefferson Health program's desire to sponsor an H1-B visa. 

International Student Eligibility

This program will consider applicants who graduated, or plan to graduate, from a non-CODA accredited dental school: No

Applicants are eligible to enroll if they are:

  • US Citizen
  • US Permanent Resident
  • Canadian Citizen
  • Canadian Permanent Resident
  • Non-US Citizen/Residents will be considered for sponsorship if you have graduated, or plan to graduate, with a DMD or DDS degree from a CODA-accredited dental school. Either 4 year or advanced standing will be considered. You do not need to be a US or Canadian citizen, but you MUST be eligible for an unrestricted Pennsylvania dental license.

You must be enrolled in or have completed a CODA-accredited dental training program (4-year or advanced status program).  We cannot make any exceptions.

You must have completed undergraduate training from a U.S. or Canadian undergraduate training program to be eligble for our six-year MD/certificate program.
