This program prepares residents to become diplomates of the American Board of Dental Public Health (ABDPH) and lays the foundation for their future careers in dental public health. Dentists with a Master of Public Health (MPH) or equivalent degree can enroll in a 12-month full-time supervised program of field experiences, academic courses, and opportunities for practical experience. Note: Patient care is not an objective of this program.
The activities of the DPH residency are uniquely adapted to your prior experience and interests. Students learn to:
1. Manage oral health programs for population health
2. Demonstrate ethical decision-making in the practice of dental public health
3. Evaluate systems of care that impact oral health
4. Design surveillance systems to measure oral health status and its Determinants
5. Communicate on oral and public health issues
6. Lead collaborations on oral and public health issues
7. Advocate for public health policy, legislation, and regulations to protect and promote the public’s oral health, and overall health
8. Critically appraise evidence to address oral health issues for individuals and populations
9. Conduct research to address oral and public health problems
10. Integrate the social determinants of health into dental public health practice

Transcript Evaluation and Instructions
Please upload all higher education transcripts to ADEA PASS. If selected for the program, you will be asked to have the institutions send official transcripts to UCSF School of Dentistry.
If you have international coursework:
You must submit to ADEA PASS a course-by-course evaluation of all international transcripts by either Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc., or World Education Services AND upload an unofficial copy of the international transcript directly to ADEA PASS.
If a WES ICAP report is submitted to PASS this will fulfill the requirement for the evaluation and transcript.
Letters of Evaluation Instructions
Please have your evaluators upload their letters directly to ADEA PASS. Three letters of evaluation are required along with an Institutional Evaluation Form.
TOEFL Requirement Instructions
Take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), if your native language is not English and you have not completed at least one year of college or university-level studies in the United States or an English-speaking Canadian Institution. Scores/results must be within two years of the opening of the application cycle. We do not accept MyBest Score
Other Requirement Instructions
UC Berkeley - UCSF Joint MPH/DPH Program
Dentists interested in dental public health but who do not possess an MPH degree can apply to the UC Berkeley MPH/UCSF DPH Joint Program. Prospective students must first apply to the one-year Interdisciplinary MPH program at UC Berkeley and indicate an interest in the DPH certificate program. UC Berkeley applications are handled through SOPHAS. Note: Please do not submit this application if you are interested in the two-year joint program. Email the UC Berkeley MPH program director once you submit your SOPHAS application to indicate your interest in the joint program:

Interview Schedule
Interviews during the 2025-26 admissions season will be conducted remotely. Invitations will be sent directly by the residency program. Interviews usually occur in January, dates TBD.
