The Division of Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral Radiology is pleased to offer a 3-year residency program with an additional focus on oral oncology and orofacial pain training that leads to a Certificate in Oral Medicine and a Master in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences. Our program has been carefully designed to offer residents broad-based training in oral medicine and oral and craniofacial sciences and to prepare them for an academic career in the field of Oral Medicine. Our program clinics include Sol Silverman Oral Medicine Center, Oral Sjogren's Clinic, and Oral Oncology and Dysplasia Clinic.

The UCSF School of Dentistry is a recognized partner on the UCSF Health Sciences Campus. Its close relationship with world-recognized Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy gives the school access to health professionals from a variety of disciplines when dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of oral disease. The University of California, San Francisco has a wide range of training experiences in patient care and research. The Comprehensive Cancer Center, HIV clinics, and transplant services at UCSF are among the best in the country and offer oral medicine residents a unique opportunity to be exposed to the care of medically complex patients. The Oral Medicine Center, with its diverse patient population, offers an excellent training ground for residents to gain and increase their knowledge on a wide range of oral diseases and conditions.

There are also many opportunities for interdisciplinary research collaborations. The UCSF campus has one of the richest environments anywhere for a student to do research, whether it is clinical or basic science. A broad selection of courses is available within the School of Dentistry and the other Schools on campus (Medicine, Pharmacy, and Nursing). In addition, the broad range of research interests among the faculty throughout the Department of Orofacial Sciences and the campus affords students the opportunity to choose among a wide variety of research projects.

The Division of Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral Radiology annually accepts two postgraduate students into the Oral Medicine Program.

Transcript Evaluation and Instructions

Please upload all higher education transcripts to ADEA PASS.  If selected for the program, you will be asked to have the institutions send official transcripts to UCSF School of Dentistry.  

If you have international coursework:

You must submit to ADEA PASS a course-by-course evaluation of all international transcripts by either Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc., or World Education Services AND upload an unofficial copy of the international transcript directly to ADEA PASS.

If a WES ICAP report is submitted to PASS this will fulfill the requirement for the evaluation and transcript.

Letters of Evaluation Instructions

Please have your evaluators upload their letters directly to ADEA PASS.  Three letters of evaluation are required along with an Institutional Evaluation Form.

TOEFL Requirement Instructions

Take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), if your native language is not English and you have not completed at least one year of college or university-level studies in the United States or an English speaking Canadian Institution.  Scores/results must be within two years of the opening of the application cycle: Minimum TOEFL score accepted is 95 or higher on the internet-based test (iBT).  We do not accept MyBest Score.

This program will consider applicants who graduated, or plan to graduate, from a non-CODA accredited dental school: Yes

Interview Schedule

Interviews usually occur in late November/December timeframe, date TBD, and will be posted when confirmed.  Interviews during the 2024-25 admissions season will be conducted remotely.  Invitations will be sent directly by the residency program.

Additional Information

If accepted into the program, the MS in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences program is a required part of the curriculum, unless you have already obtained MS or higher degree from an equivalent institute.
