The University of Kentucky Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Program is a six-year integrated medical degree/certificate program that allows graduates of accredited dental schools a unique experience in the fields of medicine and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The department matches three residents per year into the six-year program, and has been graduating residents since 1965.
Facilities
Residents provide patient care in a number of outpatient and inpatient facilities including the Chandler Medical Center, the College of Dentistry, the Veteran's Administration Hospital, and the University of Kentucky Children's Hospital. Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery has 18 block OR days per month. In the College of Dentistry, the residents see clinic patients 5 days a week and provide care to patients requiring routine and complex dentoalveolar and implant surgery on an outpatient basis. Residents also assist with the supervision of dental students in managing and treating walk-in and scheduled patients. There are 12 operatories in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic, and another three chairs at the VA dental clinic. The VA residents have three block OR days per month.
Call Schedule
The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery service is responsible for maxillofacial trauma call every third night, rotating with the Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery services. The service manages all bony and soft tissue injuries to the head and neck on these nights. Residents are also responsible for taking call the remaining nights for direct referrals to the OMFS service from within the Chandler Medical Center as well as from hospitals throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
The Curriculum
The six year program includes an internship in OMFS, the second and third years of medical school, and a PGY-1 year that includes 5 months of anesthesia and 7 months or general surgery. The final 2 years are spent on the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service.
The University of Kentucky participates in the MATCH program. Candidates accepted into the residency program will be required to obtain a Kentucky dental license before orientation. Once enrolled in the program, it is expected that residents will successfully complete all aspects of the training including the didactics afforded through the medical school. Failure in any portion of the program in either the clinical portions of the training or in medical school will result in dismissal from the training program.
Currently, the first year is spent on the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service, divided between the Veteran's Hospital, the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center, and the College of Dentistry. A Physical Diagnosis course is incorporated into the first year of training in addition to the numerous didactic courses and conferences given on a weekly basis.
OMFS residents begin medical school in July of the second year and devote the majority of their time to their medical studies. The resident participates at the level of a second year medical student progressing on to the third year of medical school with completion of Part I of USMLE. The third year of residency is spent rotating through clinical clerkships necessary to fulfill third year medical school requirements. After completion of all the MS 3 requirements, OMFS residents graduate from Medical School and enter the Medical PGY-1 year. The remaining time is spent on the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Service. The sixth year is considered the Chief year in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The Chief Residents are responsible for the daily operations of the service, management of all patients, and are the primary surgeon or first assist on most all operative procedures.
